Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in the Genesee Region is seeking a Parks & Recreation Aide to assist agency staff in the management of trees and shrubs throughout the Genesee Region.Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:• Perform tree care operations, from aerial lifts and the ground, including tree removal and pruning. • Perform planting, stump grinding, brush chipping and integrative pest and vegetation management.• Operate and maintain various equipment including chainsaws, aerial lifts, dump trucks, chippers, stump grinders, skid steers, other heavy equipment, and hand tools used in tree care and park operations.• May interact with park patrons to resolve concerns, answer questions, and give general directions.• May perform other park-related operations as needed. • Perform work during emergency events as directed by the State Emergency Management Operations Center and/or NYSOPRHP management.

Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.See Additional Comments section for operating needs.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.• Must be willing to obtain NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) Sawyer Certification.• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.• Must have the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment, including trucks, chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders and skid steers. • Must have the ability to properly identify native and ornamental park trees.• Must have the ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.• Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends in the case of emergencies. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:• One year of experience in tree care or forestry operations.• Knowledge of tree growth and physiological characteristics. The hourly rate will depend on the experience of the candidate.BENEFITS:This position has the option to join the NYS Employee’s Retirement System and may be eligible for health insurance, dental and vision coverage.
