Full job description

Description We are looking for a detail-oriented Internal Auditor to join a growing organization in the energy and natural resources sector in New Jersey. This contract position has the potential to become permanent and will support internal audit and compliance efforts by helping assess financial and operational controls, documenting results, and partnering with internal stakeholders and external auditors. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to process improvement initiatives while building hands-on experience in a collaborative audit environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Support annual Sarbanes-Oxley compliance activities by performing assigned testing and documenting results in accordance with established timelines.

  • Partner with audit team members, business units, and external auditors to review key processes, gather supporting evidence, and address control-related questions.

  • Participate in walkthroughs of financial and operational processes to understand risk exposure and confirm that controls are appropriately designed.

  • Assess whether internal controls are functioning effectively and highlight gaps, inconsistencies, or documentation issues that require follow-up.

  • Maintain organized audit records, including evidence requests, testing support, workpapers, and related tracking materials.

  • Assist with updating process documentation such as narratives and flowcharts to reflect current control activities and business procedures.

  • Recommend practical improvements that can strengthen compliance, increase efficiency, and reduce operational risk.

  • Contribute to special projects and other internal audit assignments as business needs evolve. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; progress toward CPA or CIA certification is preferred.

  • 0–2 years of experience in internal audit, public accounting, or a comparable corporate finance or compliance environment.

  • Working knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, internal control concepts, risk assessment principles, and financial reporting controls.

  • Familiarity with auditing standards, GAAP, and compliance frameworks relevant to internal audit activities.

  • Experience with audit and compliance tools such as SAP or AuditBoard is preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly to different levels of the organization.

  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams while managing multiple priorities.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10–15% as needed.
