The Chief Development Officer provides a new foundation to lead fund development efforts to new levels of success in support of key strategic priorities. This position provides strategic leadership to foster the charitable investment of individuals, corporations, foundations and other entities to advance the mission of Loyola Medicine through Loyola University Health System, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and Loyola University Niehoff School of Nursing. While the supported organizations are legally separate entities, Loyola values a donor-centered approach to engagement that will allow donors to give across a continuum to include medical education, medical research and clinical patient care. The CDO will work in close collaboration with the CEO of Loyola University Health System, the Medicine School Dean, The Nursing School Dean, the Provost for the Health Sciences Division and other senior leaders. This leader will be expected to foster a mutually respectful and collaborative relationship with Vice President for Advancement for Loyola University and university development teams.

ABOUT LOYOLA MEDICINE

Loyola Medicine, a member of Trinity Health, is a nationally ranked academic, quaternary care system based in Chicago's western suburbs. The three-hospital system includes Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC), Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, MacNeal Hospital, as well as convenient locations offering primary care, specialty care and immediate care services from nearly 2,000 physicians throughout Cook, Will and DuPage counties. Saint Joseph Health System is also part of Loyola Medicine and includes two acute care hospitals. LUMC is a 547-licensed-bed hospital in Maywood that includes the William G. and Mary A. Ryan Center for Heart & Vascular Medicine, the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, the John L. Keeley, MD, Emergency Department, a Level 1 trauma center, Illinois's largest burn center, the Nancy W. Knowles Orthopaedic Institute, a certified comprehensive stroke center, transplant center and a children’s hospital. Having delivered compassionate care for over 50 years, Loyola also trains the next generation of caregivers through its academic affiliation with Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine and Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.

Established in 1961, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital is a 235-licensed-bed community hospital in Melrose Park that includes the Judd A. Weinberg Emergency Department, the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery and Bariatric Care, Loyola Cancer Care & Research at the Marjorie G. Weinberg Cancer Center, acute rehabilitation, a transitional care center, childcare center and fitness center. Founded in 1919, MacNeal Hospital is a 349-licensed-bed teaching hospital in Berwyn with advanced medical, surgical and psychiatric services and a 68-bed behavioral health program.

POSITION PURPOSE

The position will be based in Maywood, IL (Greater Chicagoland) and will require some travel throughout the city as well as within Northern Indiana to include Saint Joseph Health (part of Loyola Medicine).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide strategic leadership for all development efforts for Loyola Medicine and the Health Sciences Division; develop a strategic philanthropy plan with short-term and long-range goals for development programs –with a focus on major and planned giving from individuals, corporations, foundations, organizations and others-- to effectively advance capital, project, program and research funding priorities. Collaborate closely with the Health System CEO, the Provost for Health Sciences, and Deans to develop strategies to bring transformational gifts to Loyola Medicine.

  2. Manage a significant personal portfolio of highly capable donors and prospects. Recruit, retain, develop, mentor and supervise the development team to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and outstanding overall performance toward goals. Actively engage key allies including health system leadership, deans, physicians, community leadership volunteers and others into a carefully planned program of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Share the vision and case for support to key community and donor constituencies to foster understanding of and interest in Loyola Medicine and the work of Health Sciences. Ensure utilization of a systematic and data-driven process to evaluate capacity and interests of prospective donors and to manage existing relationships. Utilize benchmarking and metrics to continually assess and refine the program.

  3. Ensure appropriate donor stewardship including acknowledgement, recognition, sharing impact, etc. Coordinate with Accounting / Finance to ensure all gifts are appropriately booked and documented to maintain audit-compliant records. Provide strategic counsel on matters relating to development management; keep Loyola leaders and colleagues aware of trends, benchmarks, etc.

  4. Oversee preparation and management of an annual operating budget and plan. Provide routine progress reports on progress toward goals, key gifts, etc. Be actively engaged in the civic and community life of Chicagoland. Conduct all work in a manner consistent with the vision and values of Loyola. Undertake other duties as assigned to advance philanthropy for Loyola Medicine and the Health Sciences Division

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nonprofit management, philanthropic studies, journalism, communications, marketing, business or other related field required; Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Must have six to ten (6-10) years of previous job-related experience. Ten (10) years’ experience as a development executive within a sophisticated, comprehensive development program with demonstrated achievement in systematic and measured major gift fundraising preferred with at least five (5) years as the Chief Development Officer, Foundation President, VP of Philanthropy or similar executive role; at least five years recent development experience in healthcare system or significant healthcare facility

  • Demonstrated experience orchestrating, soliciting and closing principal and major gifts at the six-, seven- and eight-figure level. Demonstrated success in a leadership role for a campaign of $25 Million+. Professional fundraising certification (CFRE, FAHP or equivalent)

  • Active involvement in advancing the philanthropy profession at a national level as demonstrated through service, speaking, thought leadership, etc.

  • Five (5) years managerial experience with proven capabilities to organize staff and provide day-to-day direction.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.

  • Ability to communicate verbally.

  • Ability to compile complex reports and develop presentations.

  • Ability to compose letters and memorandums.

  • Ability to deal calmly and courteously with people.

  • Ability to deal with stressful situations.
