The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a Maintenance Generalist Sub-Journey 2 for the Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC) in Anchorage, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Foreman, this position is responsible for performing routine maintenance tasks, including repairs and upkeep of both interior and exterior building components, systems, and structures at the Anchorage Correctional Complex. The role involves maintaining grounds, plants, and external structures, as well as conducting preventative maintenance on essential utilities and fixtures. Additionally, this position plays a key role in ensuring the efficient operation of maintenance machinery and equipment by performing a variety of essential tasks necessary for their smooth functioning.

Who We Are Looking For We are looking for a candidate that possesses the following position-specific competencies:• Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.

Any combination of education and/or experience providing the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform routine, non-specialized, and basic tasks independently while learning progressively more difficult tasks in the occupational field.
Essential Core Competencies: Knowledge of basic mathematics and the safe and proper use and care of tools common to equipment and building maintenance.?
Ability to locate and use shop and manufacturer’s reference books and manuals;?perform limited construction and maintenance repairs using appropriate tools;?perform minor maintenance and repair onhand and power tools and equipment used in the work;?perform physically demanding work;?read and write; follow and apply written and oral directions and safety sheets;?complete written reports, e.g., time sheets, incident reports, material requests;?learn and safely handle construction, maintenance wastes and hazardous materials;?and respond to emergency situations following established procedures.
Position-Specific Competencies: Sub-journey level workers are required to have the aptitude to develop, practice, and use needed skills and work behaviors; apply verbal and written instructions to individual and grouped tasks; perform routine tasks with consistent results; recognize situations requiring additional supervision or instruction in order to request assistance; apply acquired knowledge, skills, and abilities to new tasks; and learn proper usage and care of tools and equipment of the trade or craft.
Additionally: Knowledge of work practices, methods, and processes related to the building and maintenance trades; and work standards, care, or equipment and area safety practices. Ability to layout simple projects or fabrications; follow documented instructions or guidelines from codes; perform accurate calculations for estimating costs; develop knowledge of sustainable practices in routine maintenance and system operations; and recognize and perform “in kind” replacement of basic components.
Special Note: Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral prior to posting on Workplace Alaska, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.
Some positions may require any combination of Driver’s License; Commercial Driver’s License, with Specified Endorsements; Current CPR Certificate; Current First Aid Certificate; Fire Alarm System Certificate; 40 Hours of Hazardous Work Operator Training; and/or Mandatory Training.
Incumbents of positions that require a Commercial Driver’s License are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
Some positions may require a criminal background check and/or Possession of a security clearance by State or federal agencies.
Some positions may require recognition equivalent to, or certification of fitness as a Boiler Operator, Carpenter, and/or Painter.
Added Value Competencies and Certification are categorized as follows: BASIC typically includes Cement; Hardware; Rough Carpentry; Water Base Paint; Asbestos Worker Certificate; Interagency Qualification System red card; Incident Command system (ICS) red card.
MODERATE typically includes Masonry with tile, ceramics and stone; Finishes; Universal Refrigeration Certificate; Finish carpenter; Boiler (Hot Water); Appliance repair; Oil Base Paint with respirator.
HIGH typically includes Boiler (Steam); Digital controls; Electrical; Plumbing; Mechanical; Electronics and controls.
HIGHEST typically includes Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Certificate (HVAC).

“Training” and “education” in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, on-the-job, and military training), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree, apprenticeships, and trade or vocational schools) and short-duration (such as a seminar, professional development, and mircocredentials, i.e., computer science, human resources, project management) programs.

RECRUITMENT DIFFICULTIES Starting salary may be approved up to Step D-$27.31, if criteria are met.
EDUCATION If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education section of the application. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position. CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
FINGERPRINT NOTICE All Department of Corrections employees are required to be fingerprinted. The successful candidate must pass a criminal history check.
