We perform installation, rigging, millwrighting, and maintenance for manufacturing and industrial markets across the Southeast.

Job Summary

The Safety Specialist drives on-site hazard mitigation and occupational health initiatives by collaborating directly with frontline employees and site supervision. This role identifies, evaluates, and eliminates workplace risks while enforcing regulatory compliance and company safety standards. Additionally, the Specialist serves as a mentor for Safety Techs assigned to the project.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Actively promotes and strengthens our core values and culture of Mission First, People Always through everyday interactions and decisions;

  • Inspect facilities, equipment and task areas to identify potential safety hazards;

  • monitor safety performance in the workplace and provide feedback to employees, supervision and site safety lead;

  • Review site JHA's for completion and accuracy in stepping out tasks, identification of relevant hazards and proper controls and/or mitigations of hazards;

  • Ensure that PPE is utilized as required;

  • Perform and document safety equipment inspections (fire extinguishers, fall protection other PPE as required);

  • Conduct and document site safety inspections, BBS observations and required client inspections/audits as required;

  • Performs duties as competent person as required (could include scaffolding, excavation, fall protection, confined space, other as required);

  • Plans, directs and manages all Safety activities performed on single assigned jobsites with direction from site safety manager or assigned BU safety resources (Area Safety Manager/Regional Area Safety Manager/Regional Safety Director);

  • Conducts Health and Safety Training Programs and maintain all records as needed for the project (including new to site employee orientation, Southern Zero Day);

  • Training to be conducted with coordination from BU could include: Confined Space, Operator (Forklift, MEWP (Boom and Scissor lifts), Haz Comm, Spotter, Firewatch, CS attendant, other as required);

  • Investigates the causes of all accidents and injuries and completes reports as required. Uses Accidents/Near Misses, etc. as training to help prevent future occurrences;

  • Inventories and maintains appropriate quantities of all necessary safety equipment and PPE and communicates information to site safety lead/site management;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE

  • Prefer 3 to 5 years craft experience (not including helper, so apprentice or journeyman levels);

  • 4 years prior site safety experience (or craft supervisory experience in lieu of safety experience (2 to 1 ratio));

  • Prefer a min of 2 years safety experience

  • No safety supervision exp required.

EDUCATION

  • AA/MESH/Bachelor’s/Master's degrees are considered a benefit but are not required; in addition, education does allow for consideration of education in lieu of experience.

OSHA

  • OSHA 30 hr & 510 and 500 or willingness to obtain once 5 years of safety experience is acquired.

NCCER

  • NCCER CSSS

  • or other approved Professional Certifications

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

  • BCSP STS or STS-C,

  • Advanced professional certifications strongly recommended to include BCSP, CHST, IHMM, ASHM, NASP, CSM); BCSP, ASP or CSP; IHMM, CSMP or CSHM or NASP, SDS or SPC

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Advanced understanding of potential site hazards and methods used to mitigate these.

  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic understanding of conflict resolution strategies.

  • Advanced communication skills including delegation, follow up, and client interfacing

Physical Demands

Employment is contingent upon ongoing business needs, and employees may be reassigned to other roles, locations, or shifts at Southern Industrial's discretion.

Conditions include working in office, shop, busy traffic areas, warehouses, and undeveloped properties, with frequent exposure to dirt, dust, grease, oil, vibrations, and adverse weather conditions. Must be able to safely access all areas of property, buildings, structures, wharves, rooftops and other elevated positions, as well as confined spaces. Must be able to effectively use all required PPE equipment and lift up to fifty pounds. Strenuous physical demands are required to safely perform the essential functions associated with this position. Must be able to safely operate all involved equipment and tools. Must becapable of standing for long periods of time, bending consistently, working in confined spaces with limitedaccess, on ladders, in personnel lifts, in workboats, and working in awkward body positions.
