Full job description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

This is a key administrative and supervisory position responsible for the overall leadership and management of a school district’s transportation system. The Supervisor of Transportation plays an essential role in ensuring that students are transported safely, efficiently, and reliably each day.

Responsibilities include overseeing the development and coordination of transportation routes and schedules; supervising transportation personnel; managing the department budget; overseeing vehicle maintenance and safety; coordinating driver training and evaluation; and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and reporting requirements related to school bus operations.

The Supervisor works under the general supervision of a senior school district official and is provided with considerable latitude in planning, organizing, and carrying out the responsibilities of the position. General supervision is exercised over school bus drivers and other transportation department personnel.

The position requires a strong combination of leadership, organization, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, as well as a commitment to student safety and quality customer service.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Leads and coordinates the daily operations of the school district’s transportation department;

  • Develops and evaluates transportation routes to promote safe and efficient student transportation;

  • Prepares bus schedules, including time schedules and designated bus stop locations;

  • Supervises and coordinates the work schedules and assignments of transportation personnel;

  • Oversees the maintenance, repair, inspection, and overall safety of transportation vehicles;

  • Prepares the annual transportation budget and monitors department expenditures throughout the year;

  • Prepares and conducts transportation safety meetings and promotes a strong culture of safety;

  • Develops and coordinates training programs for new school bus drivers;

  • Provides ongoing guidance, support, and evaluation to transportation staff;

  • Assists with the preparation and submission of State Aid reports;

  • Establishes and enforces transportation-related safety and disciplinary procedures;

  • Works collaboratively with Building Principals to address and resolve student disciplinary matters occurring on school buses;

  • Maintains accurate driver work rosters and time records for payroll purposes;

  • Prepares required State and school district transportation reports, records, and bus route maps;

  • Reviews and approves transportation purchases, invoices, and bills;

  • Maintains required records and files for the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Transportation, State Education Department, and other regulatory agencies;

  • Maintains accurate inventories of transportation equipment, supplies, and related resources;

  • Identifies current and future transportation needs and makes recommendations regarding staffing, equipment, vehicles, and services;

  • Promotes effective communication and collaboration among transportation staff, school administrators, students, families, and other stakeholders;

  • May operate a school bus as needed;

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in the supervision or administration of a transportation system, including responsibility for performing or overseeing transportation routing, personnel scheduling, and vehicle maintenance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements (B-PS).

SPECIAL NOTE

May be required to possess 19A Certified Examiner and School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI) certifications at the time of appointment, as determined by the Appointing Authority.
