The Department of Africana Studies at Binghamton University, State University of New York, invites applications for a full-time lecturer in Africana Studies beginning in Fall 2027 for an appointment of up to three years, with the possibility of renewal. The selected candidate will teach Introduction to Africana Studies with an emphasis on Black history and social movements, especially in black nationalism, Pan-Africanism and social justice.

The successful candidate will teach three undergraduate courses per semester including multiple sections of lecture format of Introduction to Africana Studies. Some of the courses will be lecture-format general education courses. The teaching load includes both large lecture courses and smaller discussion courses.

We seek candidates who have experience teaching in black history and social justice, and who are engaged in the study of best practices in college teaching. We are especially interested in candidates with teaching experience in transnational and intercultural contexts as well as a knowledge of developments in the field of Black Nationalism/Pan Africanism. We are also especially interested in applicants who view teaching and research as areas to promote diversity and perspectives that are underrepresented in higher education.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Africana Studies or a related field by August 16, 2027

  • Experience in undergraduate teaching

  • Experience or ability to teach historical and contemporary issues in black studies and movements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in leadership with undergraduate pedagogy or student mentoring

  • Experience teaching courses that focus on social justice

  • Interest in outreach across departments and disciplines
