Full job description
Description
Are you a hands-on engineer who thrives at the bench with a soldering iron in one hand and a multimeter in the other? Amazon's Hardware Security team is looking for a Lab Engineer to support security testing operations across our consumer electronics portfolio. This is a tactical role that combines two areas of work: physical device operations (teardowns, sample handling, and data gathering) and lab operations coordination (sample logistics, program tracking, and coordination support).
You will work alongside security engineers, using tools such as X-ray systems, microscopes, 3D printers, and other electronics lab equipment to evaluate hardware security across devices that ship to millions of households worldwide. Your findings will directly inform whether a product's security design meets the bar before it reaches customers. If you are comfortable performing device teardowns and rework at the bench, and equally at ease coordinating sample logistics and maintaining program records, this role offers a real opportunity to grow your career in hardware security.
Key job responsibilities
-
Perform device teardowns and security assessments on prototype and production hardware using X-ray systems, microscopes, soldering irons, and other lab equipment, then capture, log, and organize teardown data and photographs for security engineering review.
-
Manage end-to-end hardware sample logistics — request samples from program teams, coordinate shipment and receipt, maintain chain-of-custody records, and keep the device tracker accurate and up to date.
-
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized lab environment, including developing and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), supporting environmental health and safety compliance, and identifying opportunities to improve lab efficiency.
-
Collaborate with security engineers, Technical Program Managers (TPMs), and cross-functional partners in software, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality to ensure the hardware security team is engaged throughout the product development process.
-
Support program coordination by tracking active security work, maintaining task tickets, and organizing documentation packages for security reviews.
A day in the life
Your morning might begin with preparing a batch of device samples for teardown and data acquisition - setting up the X-ray machine or microscope, verifying sample chain of custody, and working with security engineers to plan for the day. After a focused stretch at the bench capturing component-level data and photographs, you shift gears to update the device tracker and coordinate with a TPM on incoming samples for an upcoming milestone. You'll regularly participate in team stand-ups where you share status on open tasks and flag any blockers.
About the team
The Hardware Security team within Amazon Security partners with hardware development teams across the company to evaluate and strengthen the security of Amazon's consumer devices. The team is primarily composed of security engineers and works cross-functionally with software, hardware, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, and quality organizations. Our assessments feed directly into product launch decisions, giving the work a clear link to what ships to customers.
We are investing in building a permanent, dedicated lab engineering capability to support our growing scope. Joining now means you will help shape how the lab operates for the long term while gaining broad exposure to the security challenges behind Amazon's consumer hardware lineup.
Basic Qualifications
-
Knowledge of mechanical or electrical systems design
-
Experience in hardware lab equipment such as digital scopes, logic analyzers, and soldering tools
-
Experience reviewing and understanding engineering design documents for electronic, mechanical and electro-mechanical parts and assembly drawings of products
-
2+ years of computer hardware troubleshooting and repair experience, or experience in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Networking Engineering)
-
Experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, or experience with automation and any version control tools
-
Associate's degree or equivalent in Electronics, Mechanics, Product Design, Manufacturing Technologies, Computer Science, or other STEM discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree or above in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent, or experience working in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)
-
Experience coordinating cross-functional inputs, meeting deadlines, and effectively managing competing priorities
-
Experience managing and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously
-
Experience with hardware security testing or prototype device handling.
-
Experience managing hardware sample logistics and chain of custody.
-
Familiarity with Amazon's Product Development Process (PDP) and hardware validation stages (HVT/EVT/DVT/PVT).
-
Experience with program tracking tools (Taskei or similar) and status reporting.
