CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Graduate Center (GC) is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at the City University of New York (CUNY), the nation's largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master’s programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center’s commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a 200,000 square-foot facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.
The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life.
The Ph.D. Program in Political Science at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York is hiring in the area of American politics, broadly construed. We welcome candidates at the level of advanced assistant professor or associate professor whose research addresses major questions in urban politics, political institutions, political behavior, public opinion, social movements, public law, race and ethnicity, or gender and sexuality. In addition, we would particularly value a candidate with strong quantitative methodological training who can contribute to the Program’s graduate methods curriculum. Given the Graduate Center’s interest in strengthening connections with public institutions and policy communities, candidates with experience conducting policy-relevant or publicly engaged research would also be particularly valuable.
This position is expected to begin in Fall 2027.
About the Ph.D. Program in Political Science at the CUNY Graduate Center
The Ph.D. Program in Political Science at the CUNY Graduate Center was founded in 1965 and the M.A. Program was added in 1977. Like most departments at the Graduate Center, Political Science leverages the strength of the entire CUNY system by combining central line faculty members (e.g. the position being advertised) and "consortial" faculty members with active research agendas from the senior colleges in CUNY. In total, there are nearly 60 faculty members teaching and advising the approximately 120 Ph.D. students enrolled in the program. In addition, the department admits another 15 students into its M.A. Program each year who are seeking to further their careers in public agencies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, think tanks, and journalism. In addition, the Department is affiliated with various institutes and centers, such as the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality, The Center for Urban Research, and the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies.
