Powertrain Quality & Reliability Engineer Job Overview / Summary

We are seeking a Powertrain Quality & Reliability Engineer to identify, investigate, and resolve quality and reliability issues affecting engine and thermal systems throughout the product lifecycle. This role focuses on root cause analysis, warranty data and trend analysis, engineering testing, and the development of effective repair and quality improvement strategies. The ideal candidate will have experience with internal combustion engines, thermal systems, or after-treatment systems, along with strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support cost-reduction initiatives and AI tool development to improve quality and reduce warranty-related expenses.

  • Evaluate high-warranty-cost and high-failure-rate subsystems, engine applications, and vehicle applications.

  • Apply structured problem-solving methods to identify root causes of quality and reliability issues.

  • Analyze warranty data and trends to identify opportunities for more efficient repair processes.

  • Develop strategies and tools to identify potential issues earlier in the product lifecycle.

  • Design, execute, or coordinate analytical and physical testing, from component-level bench testing to full powertrain and vehicle testing.

  • Replicate quality issues, determine root causes, and validate corrective actions through testing.

  • Collaborate with quality engineers, powertrain engineers, technical specialists, and cross-functional teams.

  • Present project status, findings, risks, and results to senior management.

  • Share process improvements, lessons learned, and problem-solving practices across quality teams.

  • Lead problem-solving subgroups and support multiple project workstreams.

  • Document lessons learned to preserve technical knowledge and prevent recurring issues.

  • Support the development of improved designs and test plans to enhance product reliability and service solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • At least 6 months of experience leading projects.

  • At least 6 months of experience with internal combustion engines, thermal systems, or after-treatment systems in one or more of the following areas: design, testing, controls, or calibration.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with data analysis and Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and charts.

  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint to communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations.

  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, investigate failures, and validate corrective actions.

  • Strong project management, organizational, teamwork, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously and adapt to new challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or Design for Six Sigma experience.

  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving, Failure Mode Avoidance, and robustness and reliability processes.

  • Knowledge of quality tools and continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Knowledge of key engine and powertrain subsystems, including the base engine, cooling, airpath, fuel, and after-treatment systems.

  • Familiarity with statistical methods, including confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.

  • Experience with Python for data cleaning, statistical analysis, and visualization.

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), BigQuery, and large-scale engineering datasets.

  • Experience developing data and analytics dashboards to monitor quality trends, defects, and testing progress.

  • Background in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering.

  • Experience with hardware, sensors, data acquisition equipment, or test fixtures.

  • Experience preparing or updating technical and engineering documentation.

  • Ability to apply Six Sigma and DMAIC methodologies to reduce defects, variation, or process inefficiencies.
