This role focuses on order entry and triage within a closed-door pharmacy environment, handling incoming prescriptions, calls, and documentation from long-term care facilities and healthcare professionals. The Order Entry / Customer Service Pharmacy Technician reviews and prepares prescription information, ensures accuracy before orders move to processing, and helps resolve issues related to medication orders and automated dispensing systems. This position offers a predictable schedule, a technology-driven setting, and the opportunity to work with educated colleagues in a noncustomer-facing role.

Responsibilities

  • Handle order entry and triage for incoming prescriptions from long-term care facilities and other healthcare providers.

  • Answer incoming phone calls and direct them to the appropriate person or department as needed.

  • Communicate professionally with long-term care facilities, pharmacists, nurses, and physicians to obtain and clarify prescription information.

  • Receive drug orders via fax and other electronic formats and review them for completeness and accuracy.

  • Answer questions related to medications, prescriptions, and order status within the scope of a pharmacy technician role.

  • Review patient profiles during triage to determine whether it is appropriate to place an order based on the information provided.

  • Prepare documents by highlighting pertinent information electronically and forwarding them to the order entry team for processing.

  • Call all new admissions at long-term care facilities to confirm and coordinate medication orders.

  • Investigate issues with orders by reviewing original documentation and understanding how the Automatic Dispensing Unit operates.

  • Perform accurate data entry of prescription and patient information into the pharmacy system.

  • Assist with order transfers to retail pharmacies as needed.

  • Support inventory-related tasks associated with order entry and medication processing, as required.

  • Maintain a high level of customer service when interacting with internal teams and external healthcare partners.

  • Follow all pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements related to order entry and medication handling.

Essential Skills

  • Registered pharmacy technician with the state of Pennsylvania (state registration is required; national certification alone does not qualify).

  • At least 6+ months of pharmacy experience in a retail (such as CVS, Walgreens, or similar) or long-term care setting, specifically on the order entry or triage side.

  • Experience in retail pharmacy that includes typing prescription orders and familiarity with SIG codes.

  • Proficiency in data entry with strong attention to accuracy and detail.

  • Demonstrated customer service experience, particularly in a pharmacy or healthcare environment.

  • Ability to interpret and process faxed and electronic prescription orders.

  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and long-term care facility staff.

  • Understanding of pharmacy workflows, including order entry, triage, and transfer processes.

  • Capability to review patient profiles and make appropriate decisions about order placement within the technician scope.

  • Basic understanding of how Automatic Dispensing Units function in relation to medication orders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Pharmacy technician certification (national certification) is beneficial in addition to required Pennsylvania registration.

  • Experience working as a pharmacy technician in large retail chains or similar environments such as Target, Walgreens, or CVS.

  • Previous experience in long-term care pharmacy, particularly with order entry and triage responsibilities.

  • Familiarity with pharmacy frameworks and technology-driven systems used for order entry and document management.

  • Experience with inventory processes related to pharmacy operations.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, technology-focused environment.

  • Comfort working in a structured setting with a predictable schedule and defined workflows.

Work Environment

This position is based in a closed-door pharmacy environment that is not customer facing, providing a professional setting focused on supporting long-term care and related healthcare partners. The team manages the front line of the pharmacy, including all incoming phone calls, faxes, and electronic orders. You will work in your own cubicle with access to technology-driven systems for triaging documents, highlighting key information, and routing orders to team members responsible for typing and processing. The group also handles order transfers to retail pharmacies. The culture has a growing, early-stage, startup feel where processes are still being refined, offering opportunities to adapt and contribute to improvements. The role follows a predictable schedule, with at least one available shift from 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Dress expectations align with a professional pharmacy environment, supporting a focused and collaborative workplace.
