Estimator - Heavy Civil / Earthwork Construction

Overview: A well-established, family-oriented heavy civil construction company is seeking an experienced Estimator to join its growing team. With more than six decades of success, the organization specializes in site development, earthwork, excavation, underground utilities, and commercial/industrial construction projects throughout the region.

This is an opportunity to join a financially stable company with long employee tenure, strong leadership, and a clear succession plan. The selected candidate will work closely with senior leadership and experienced estimators while playing a key role in securing high-profile civil construction projects.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Base salary: $120,000 - $135,000+ depending on experience

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for heavy civil, site development, excavation, and underground utility projects
  • Analyze plans, specifications, and project documents to develop competitive bids
  • Perform earthwork quantity calculations, dirt takeoffs, and pipe takeoffs
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to obtain pricing and compare supplier takeoffs against internal calculations
  • Utilize estimating software and Excel-based estimating tools to build accurate project estimates
  • Review and revise bids as project drawings and specifications evolve
  • Manage multiple bids simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines
  • Participate in project site visits and occasional client meetings
  • Collaborate with senior estimators and company leadership on bid strategy and project selection
  • Continuously evaluate methods, pricing strategies, and construction approaches to maximize competitiveness and profitability

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of construction industry experience
  • Proven construction estimating experience
  • Strong background in heavy civil construction, earthwork, excavation, grading, site development, or underground utilities
  • Strong understanding of dirt quantities, excavation calculations, and pipe takeoffs
  • Ability to identify discrepancies and errors within estimates
  • Practical field construction knowledge gained through a contractor, site development, civil construction, or related environment
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines and adapt to changing project requirements
