Job Description
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Location: Princeton University
Salary Range or Pay Grade: PDRA: $65,000 - $70,000/year and ARS: $73,700 - $79,000/year
Description
Princeton University seeks a postdoctoral research associate or a more senior researcher to develop Penning-trap experiments for quantum sensing and precision studies of fundamental symmetries using trapped atomic and molecular ions. Specifically, the Udrescu Lab seeks a highly motivated applicant with a strong background in the design, construction, and operation of Penning traps. The lab, located within the Department of Physics, develops experimental techniques to study fundamental physics phenomena, with the long-term goal of building novel research platforms using negatively charged species and radioactive atoms and molecules. The successful candidate will play a leading role in developing experiments to investigate the low-energy nuclear structure of protactinium-229 and to trap and cool thorium negative ions (Th⁻).
Relevant expertise includes ion trapping and manipulation, ultrahigh-vacuum and cryogenic systems, charged-particle detection, low-noise electronics, and experimental control. Experience with laser spectroscopy, ion-optics and laser cooling simulations, or radioactive ion beams would also be valuable.
The ideal candidate is an excellent troubleshooter with great technical abilities, a proven ability to work independently, and a collaborative mindset. They will be expected to lead the design and commissioning of experimental apparatus, develop and carry out research projects, mentor junior researchers, and collaborate with other laboratories and rare-isotope facilities on challenging long-term projects.
The work location will be primarily in-person on campus at Princeton University, or subject to approval at an off-campus location where the research project is being undertaken.
The term of the appointment is based on rank. Positions at the postdoctoral rank are for one year, renewable annually based on funding and meeting all requirements; those hired at a more senior rank may have multi-year appointments.
This position is not eligible for sponsorship of an H-1B Visa requiring consular processing; other Visa sponsorships (including H-1B not requiring consular processing) may be available, as appropriate.
This position is subject to the University's background check policy.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications
-
A doctoral degree in physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field by the start of the appointment.
-
Hands-on experience designing, constructing, and troubleshooting scientific instruments.
-
Prior experience with designing and building Penning traps.
-
Experience integrating hardware and software for experimental control and data acquisition.
-
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
-
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Preferred skills
-
Experience designing, constructing and commissioning Penning traps.
-
Experience in one or more of the following areas:
o Ion loading, confinement, cooling, and detection.
o Non-neutral plasma control, including rotating-wall techniques.
o Ultrahigh-vacuum systems, cryogenics, and superconducting magnets.
o Low-noise electronics, radiofrequency techniques, and precision electrode-voltage control.
o Electrostatic modeling and charged-particle trajectory simulations (e.g., SIMION or COMSOL).
o Laser spectroscopy, laser stabilization, or laser cooling.
o Electron detection, charged-particle spectroscopy, or experiments with radioactive ions.
-
Demonstrated ability to develop experimental apparatus to address a scientific question.
-
Experience mentoring students and contributing to collaborative research projects.
Application Instructions
Applicants must apply online and must include a cover letter, a CV, and contact information for three references; however, letters of reference will only be requested for shortlisted candidates.
