Full job description

Description

At 1898 & Co., we are helping shape the future of transmission systems across North America. Our Transmission Planning & Power Systems Analysis (TPPSA) team works with investor-owned utilities, public power entities, developers, and ISOs/RTOs to address increasingly complex grid planning and infrastructure challenges.

We are seeking a Project Delivery Director to provide leadership and oversight for project delivery within our TPPSA business line. This position will help establish and maintain consistent project-delivery practices, strengthen the performance and development of our Project Delivery Managers, and support the successful execution of a growing portfolio of consulting engagements.

The Project Delivery Director will work closely with business-line leadership, Project Delivery Managers, technical leaders, project managers, and other 1898 & Co. leaders to improve project outcomes, manage delivery risk, and support profitable growth. The successful candidate will combine strong project-delivery experience with practical leadership, sound business judgment, and the ability to work across teams.

What You’ll Do

Project Delivery Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for project delivery across the TPPSA portfolio.

  • Establish clear expectations and consistent practices for project planning, execution, monitoring, forecasting, and closeout.

  • Support project delivery teams and project managers in developing practical execution strategies for complex consulting engagements.

  • Review project performance and help teams identify and address issues related to scope, schedule, budget, staffing, quality, and client commitments.

  • Promote accountability for project results while helping teams resolve delivery challenges early.

  • Support the consistent use of applicable project-delivery tools, systems, processes, and performance measures.

  • Help define and advance project-delivery priorities that are aligned with business-line and company objectives.

Project Performance and Risk Management

  • Monitor the health and performance of the project portfolio, including financial results, schedule performance, resource needs, quality, and delivery risk.

  • Work with project teams to develop recovery plans for projects that are not meeting expectations.

  • Support effective project initiation, including alignment on scope, responsibilities, staffing, schedule, budget, and client expectations.

  • Help teams manage scope changes, contract requirements, project risks, and commercial considerations throughout project execution.

  • Identify recurring delivery challenges and lead improvements that strengthen project performance across the business line.

  • Support appropriate quality-management and review processes for project deliverables.

  • Elevate significant project risks and performance concerns to business-line leadership when appropriate.

Project Delivery Manager Development

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and support to project delivery teams within TPPSA.

  • Support the selection, onboarding, and development of employees serving in project-delivery leadership positions.

  • Facilitate the sharing of lessons learned, delivery practices, and practical tools across projects and teams.

  • Help project delivery teams strengthen their capabilities in financial management, forecasting, risk management, client communication, team leadership, and project controls.

  • Provide direct, constructive feedback that supports individual development and improves project outcomes.

Resource and Operational Coordination

  • Work with business-line leaders and project teams to understand workload, staffing requirements, and delivery priorities.

  • Help identify and resolve resource constraints that could affect project commitments or portfolio performance.

  • Support alignment among project scope, staffing plans, schedules, and budgets.

  • Promote effective coordination among project delivery teams, project managers, technical leaders, and functional leadership.

  • Provide visibility into project and portfolio needs to support informed operational decisions.

  • Help balance project requirements, staff development opportunities, and business priorities.

Client and Business Support

  • Support project teams in establishing clear client expectations and maintaining effective communication throughout project execution.

  • Participate in client discussions when senior project-delivery leadership or issue resolution is needed.

  • Collaborate with business-development and proposal teams to develop achievable execution strategies, staffing plans, schedules, and budgets for new opportunities.

  • Apply lessons learned from active and completed projects to improve future proposals and delivery plans.

  • Support the transition of awarded work from business development into project execution.

  • Help strengthen client confidence through reliable, transparent, and consistent project delivery.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Build strong working relationships across TPPSA, 1898 & Co., and Burns & McDonnell.

  • Promote a collaborative environment in which project, technical, and business leaders share accountability for successful project outcomes.

  • Lead through influence and help teams navigate competing priorities, organizational change, and complex delivery issues.

  • Reinforce Burns & McDonnell’s culture, values, and commitment to client service.

  • Support broader company and 1898 & Co. initiatives related to project delivery, operational excellence, and profitable growth.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, construction management, project management, or a related field from an accredited program.

  • Significant experience leading the delivery of consulting, engineering, infrastructure, or other professional-services projects.

  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple projects, programs, or a portfolio of work.

  • Experience leading and developing project managers, project delivery managers, or other project-delivery professionals.

  • Strong understanding of project financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, earned revenue, profitability, and change management.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify project risks, address performance issues, and guide teams through project recovery.

  • Experience supporting proposals, project planning, contract execution, and client communication.

  • Transmission planning, power systems, electric utility, or energy-industry experience is preferred.

  • Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to communicate complex project and business information clearly to project teams, leadership, and clients.

  • Ability to lead through influence and work effectively across organizational and technical boundaries.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with project-management, financial-management, or portfolio-reporting systems is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, business or related degree from accredited program and 13 years related professional experience required.

  • Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferable.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Must possess strong people management skills, interpersonal skills, project management experience, and a strategic perspective.
