Position Summary/Description:

The School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a Data Manager to serve as a data manager and programmer on the Creating Indicators and Improving Outcomes project. This position will be work under the leadership of Research Associate Professor – Dr. C. Joy Stewart.

The Data Manager is responsible for managing and analyzing data from multiple human services information systems to support research, program evaluation, and reporting efforts. The individual extracts, maintains, and integrates data from various sources to create longitudinal datasets that track the experiences and outcomes of children and families participating in human services programs. Responsibilities also include maintaining and updating a public-facing website that provides key performance indicators and outcome measures, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and quality through regular updates and quality control processes.

In addition, the role supports the evaluation of human services programs by collecting and analyzing operational data, developing surveys and other data collection instruments, and assessing the effectiveness of training provided to child welfare professionals and social services staff. The individual contributes to broader program evaluation initiatives designed to measure the impact of social services programs and interventions.

The Data Manager plays a key role in research activities, including the development and management of complex research projects, conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses, and preparing reports, publications, and presentations for state and local stakeholders. The individual collaborates with research teams to communicate findings, present results at meetings and conferences, and support grant and funding efforts through proposal development, research design, methodology implementation, and budget monitoring. Overall, the role combines data management, program evaluation, and research expertise to inform decision-making and improve human services outcomes.

Education and Experience:

Experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Experience in data collection instrument and questionnaire design.

Experience in SAS / SPSS /R/ STATA programming or SQL databases and Python or other languages.

Training and experience in working with administrative and/or operational data is highly desirable.

Advanced degree in social work, public policy, statistics, data analytics, or a social science discipline.

Essential Skills:

Experience in managing large datasets and programming using a variety of software.

Ability to communicate (written and spoken) technical material to a variety of audiences.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently.

Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately review, organize, and manage information.
