Job Description
Insight Global is seeking a Structured Cabling Technician to support a DOD infrastructure project in El Segundo, CA. This individual will be responsible for installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting copper and fiber optic cabling, as well as building and supporting telecom closets, racks, patch panels, and related network infrastructure. The ideal candidate has experience with low-voltage systems, structured cabling installations, reading blueprints, and working in construction or data center environments. This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in physically demanding environments.
Skills and Requirements
Required Skills/Experience:
- The technician will install a work area outlet for floor or wall (terminate CAT 5, 5e, 6, & CAT 6A jacks.) Mount face plates and surface mount boxes correctly to project specs.
- The technician will build closets (Mount and install backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware). Install grounding for racks, equipment and cable as required. Complete all IDC connections (e.g. terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
- The technician will install, terminate, and test fiber-optic cabling (to include single/multi-mode, variable strand count, fusion splice/quick connect terminations).
- The technician performs testing: continuity test horizontal and riser cable; use of cable tester; troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable.
- The technician will identify active voice or data circuits.
- The technician will fully complete all required IES Communications paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers and others as required).
- The technician will adhere to and participate in all Company, customer and industry quality and safety standards and regulations.
- The technician will complete other responsibilities as assigned.
Physical/Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to work at heights, on a ladder and in confined spaces, lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to endure long periods of standing, walking, or working in inclement weather and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to lift and move heavy objects.
- Must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
- Must have adequate transportation to get to the jobsite.
- Must possess proven problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to effectively read and write.
- Must possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in telecommunications or related technical field.
- Must possess and be proficient with the listed tools.
- Must have proven skill level to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including but not limited to, specifications, reporting, and quality requirements.
- Must know the universal communications color codes.
