Full job description

At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. Please visit our DOTD Career Center for more information about our agency. DOTD is seeking an Engineer Intern Applicant – Engineer Intern 2 to support transportation projects and programs. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews. No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series. Positions are located Jennings, and reports to Project Engineer. Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE: This is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.

NOTE: Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com. The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Depending on level and assignment, Engineer Intern Applicant-Engineer Intern 2 may:

  • Perform engineering work related to construction project delivery, field engineering, or construction oversight.
  • Review plans, specifications, estimates, construction documentation, and project records.
  • Monitor or assist with review of contractor work for compliance with DOTD standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors, project engineers, inspectors, consultants, and internal DOTD staff.
  • Review quantities, documentation, payments, work zone information, or project-related materials as assigned.
  • Support construction certification, eConstruction, fabrication, field documentation, or final audit activities.
  • Assist with resolving construction-related issues, technical questions, or project delivery concerns.
  • Support emergency or disaster response activities as needed.

Position-Specific Details: Career Progression: This Position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as Engineer Intern Applicant, Engineer Intern 1, or Engineer Intern 2. Compensation: Below is the starting rate of pay for the Engineer Intern Applicant level, and the Special Entrance Rates (SER) for the additional levels in this job series:

  • Engineer Intern Applicant - $24.04 hourly / $1,923.20 Biweekly - Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

  • Engineer Intern 1 - Special Entrance Rate (SER) $33.66 hourly / $2,692.80 Biweekly. Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

  • Engineer Intern 2 - Special Entrance Rate (SER) $36.02 hourly / $2,881.60 Biweekly. Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate plus one year of professional engineering experience.

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a job appointment or probational appointment. A job appointment is a temporary appointment that may last up to 36 months.
