Job Description

The Per Diem Scientific Editor provides editorial, formatting, and presentation support for scientific manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other scholarly materials authored or presented by the Program Director. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that manuscripts and presentations adhere to journal, conference, sponsor, institutional, and presentation-specific requirements regarding formatting, style, grammar, spelling, references, and overall quality. A substantial component of this role involves developing, editing, and maintaining professional PowerPoint presentations for the Program Director. This position may be performed remotely and offers scheduling flexibility based on project volume, manuscript deadlines, and the needs of the Program Director. This position is strictly an editorial support role and does not confer authorship or co-authorship.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Life Sciences, Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field; or equivalent experience. Master’s degree in a scientific, medical, communications, or related discipline highly preferred

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience editing scientific, medical, academic, or scholarly documents.

  • Demonstrated expertise and advanced proficiency with EndNote, including reference library management, citation formatting, journal style conversions, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience using other citation management platforms such as Zotero, Mendeley, or RefWorks.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • Exceptional proofreading, copyediting, and document formatting skills

  • Experience supporting manuscript preparation within an academic medical Program, research institution, scientific society, or publishing organization.

  • Familiarity with journal submission systems and publication requirements

  • Expert knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and scientific writing conventions.

  • Advanced knowledge of scholarly publication standards and manuscript formatting requirements.

  • Expertise in reference management and bibliography formatting.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Edit scientific manuscripts, abstracts, review articles, correspondence, and related documents authored by or prepared for the Program Director.

  • Format manuscripts according to journal-specific submission requirements.

  • Review and format tables, figures, legends, appendices, and supplementary materials.

  • Perform proofreading and spellcheck reviews to identify grammatical, typographical, punctuation, and formatting errors.

  • Manage, organize, and format references using EndNote and other citation management software.

  • Convert references to journal-specific citation styles and formatting requirements.

  • Verify consistency, completeness, and accuracy of citations and reference lists.

  • Create, edit, format, and maintain PowerPoint presentations for the Program Director.

  • Apply institutional branding standards and presentation best practices.

  • Assist in preparing presentations for scientific conferences, invited lectures, board meetings, donor presentations, and leadership briefings delivered by the Program Director.

  • Maintain confidentiality of unpublished research data, manuscripts, presentations, and proprietary information.

Compensation Statement

Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $65 - $65 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
