Overview

Under the direction of facilities leadership, this role programs, commissions, and maintains building automation and electro-mechanical systems in healthcare environments, including HVAC controls and energy management. Responsibilities include interpreting construction submittals and blueprints; installing, networking, troubleshooting, and repairing systems; and using hand and power tools while adhering to safety requirements and standard operating procedures for construction, preventive, and corrective maintenance. Applies advanced technical expertise, such as graphical and ladder logic programming, to ensure reliable, efficient, and compliant operation of critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Operate and maintain building automation, mechanical, and life safety systems

  • Maintains reliable operation of building automation, HVAC, and related mechanical systems to support facility performance.

  • Responds promptly to urgent requests; completes repairs correctly and completely to minimize disruption.

  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots building and life safety system interfaces; tests, repairs, and maintains fire and smoke dampers with complete records.

  • Keeps shops and mechanical rooms clean and free of unnecessary items; maintains professional relationships and communications with occupants and staff.

  • Performs assigned duties during emergencies and drills; participates in on-call rotation to support continuous operations.

  • Informs department leadership on projects so communications can be coordinated with other departments

Commission, install, and integrate Building Automation Systems (BAS)

  • Installs, expands, configures, and commissions building automation systems; ensures data-based generation of critical equipment records are up to date and recorded.

  • Utilizes critical thinking and independent judgment; maintains responsibility and accountability for the condition of assigned BAS and mechanical equipment.

  • Collaborates closely with IT and other technical teams on system integration and to ensure network security is maintained.

  • Develops and optimizes control logic and graphics within BAS platforms to meet operational requirements.

  • Coordinates system upgrades and expansions with department leadership to minimize operational disruption.

Documentation, compliance, safety, and continuous improvement

  • Utilizes logs and maintains all documents required in accordance with SOPs and Authority Having Jurisdiction requirements.

  • Understands, observes, and complies with all safety precautions and procedures of the department.

  • Maintains strong knowledge of assigned BAS platforms and provides training and technical guidance to team members.

  • Pursues additional training and self-development to maintain and update skills necessary to operate and repair current and new equipment.

  • Proactively recommends system and policy improvements to department leadership and conducts self-evaluation to improve productivity and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Industrial or commercial maintenance experience, with general knowledge of electro-mechanical equipment and systems, ability to read and understand blueprints, and effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Maintenance experience in an industrial or commercial setting focused on troubleshooting and repair of BAS.

  • Valid driver's license

  • Reads, writes, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.

  • Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser. Operates hospital electro-mechanical systems and associated repair equipment; uses and maintains hand and power tools; works from blueprints; uses usual and customary equipment to perform essential functions.

  • Expert knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), including graphic programming language and database generation of critical records.

  • Installs, troubleshoots, and commissions hospital BAS hardware and networking systems.

  • Knowledge and use of safety equipment to maintain building systems and safety equipment used in health care facilities.

  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for construction projects, corrective maintenance, and preventative maintenance.

  • Exercises sound judgment on urgent and confidential matters; copes effectively in stressful situations and under time constraints.

  • Interacts frequently with staff at all levels; maintains a professional image and exceptional customer service attitude.

  • Safely lifts 75 pounds and safely climbs and works from a 12-foot ladder.
