Full job description

Our client, a leading organization in heavy equipment manufacturing and industrial automation, is seeking a Lead Software Development Engineer to join their team. As a Lead Software Development Engineer, you will be part of the engineering department supporting software development for real-time embedded control systems. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a collaborative mindset which will align successfully in the organization.

Location: Hazel Crest, Illinois

What's the Job?

  • Mentor other software engineers specializing in programmable hardware and displays, providing guidance, feedback, and support to ensure the successful delivery of automation projects.

  • Lead the full software development lifecycle from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, and commissioning.

  • Collaborate closely with vehicle systems experts, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to define project requirements, develop software solutions, and integrate programmable systems with other control systems and equipment.

  • Define and own the software development lifecycle infrastructure for industrial automation projects, including branching strategies, versioning standards, and release governance.

  • Develop and maintain project plans and schedules; monitor project progress and identify risks or issues that may impact delivery timelines.

What's Needed?

  • Accredited engineering degree with an emphasis in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.

  • Product development experience, preferably within heavy equipment, off-highway, agricultural equipment, transportation, automotive, or material handling industries.

  • Proficiency with Atlassian toolchain (Bitbucket, Jira) including repository management, branching strategies, pull request workflows, and pipeline configuration.

  • Strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Python, or MATLAB/Simulink, especially for motion control systems.

  • Experience working with motion control hardware components like servo drives, motors, encoders, and actuators, and familiarity with communication protocols such as EtherCAT, CAN bus, and Modbus.
