SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse works in partnership with Nursing program faculty responsible for planning, coordinating, and facilitating education interventions and the instruction of associate degree (RN) students in the FVCC nursing lab, on the LCC campus, and at clinical sites in Libby and the surrounding community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Laboratory Instruction

Serves as professional role model to students.

Provides instructional support and functions in a nursing lab environment under the guidance of nursing faculty.

Works with students individually and in small groups to demonstrate procedures and use of equipment and materials.

Participates in clinical instruction for NRSG clinical and lab courses as needed.

Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates instructional materials in assigned areas of nursing lab and clinical teaching.

Provides or recommends support and assistance for students having difficulty in achieving course objectives (individual meetings with faculty, tutoring, etc.).

Maintains supply usage records and monitors equipment check-outs as directed.

Troubleshoots equipment problems in collaboration with Kalispell campus Lab Coordinator. Advises appropriate person in the case of malfunctioning equipment.

Orders inventory equipment and supplies in collaboration with Kalispell Lab Coordinator.

Coordinates and maintains simulation manikins in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions in collaboration with the Kalispell Lab Coordinator.

Clinical Placement Coordination

Communicates via email, phone and/or in person with nurse educators and/or placement coordinators in hospitals and clinics to develop clinical placement sites.

Coordinates with director/faculty to determine the numbers of student placements needed at each semester, level, and type of experience needed ( e.g. Peds, OB, Med-Surg, etc.)

Identifies facility requirements at each clinical placement location, such as orientation and electronic medical record (EHR) training, and communicate these clinical entry requirements to faculty and student groups in a timely manner.

Keep a record of clinical entry requirements, updating them as required.

Follows individual facility process for requests for groups of students and for precepted positions and meets facility deadlines.

Develops clinical schedules for each clinical course in coordination with faculty for the course.

Confirms placements with nurse educators/placement coordinators in hospitals and clinical sites by timely follow up communication, and confirms with Nursing Program Director, and course faculty.

Attends meetings with clinical site leaders regarding clinical placements as directed.

Clinical Resource Registered Nurse:

Instructs student nurses in the theoretical and clinical aspects of the practice of nursing in the clinical setting under the direction of the nursing director or faculty.

Consults with Nursing Program Director and faculty in developing clinical learning opportunities that meet the outcomes for the nursing program.

Instructs students and facilitates discussions about accepted methods of evidenced based nursing practice including professional aspects of nursing, theories of physiology and psychodynamics, assessment, nursing interventions, medical, surgical and other health treatments (such as observing and recording symptoms and applying principles of asepsis and antisepsis, etc.).

Interacts and collaborates with nursing service personnel to enhance learning experience in nursing unit or community.

Supervises care provided by a group of students (usually 3-5 students in a group) while they complete their clinical rotation in assigned areas.

Collaborates with the faculty to assign students to patients and observes performance in actual nursing situations.

Makes systematic observations and objective judgments about student performance; provides input on clinical paperwork to determine student achievement; maintains necessary records to document student progress.

Assists students through observational and participative experiences to apply nursing theory, the nursing process and nursing techniques in clinical settings.

Counsels students on educational and related problems; facilitates problem solving process; offers advice and assistance as deemed necessary with input from lead faculty.

Maintains and updates student and other administrative files.

Makes recommendations to the Nursing Program Director and faculty in developing curriculum content and improved teaching and nursing techniques.

Standard

Participates in related training, workshops, and professional development for personal and professional growth.

Maintains office hours according to FVCC policies.

Attends meetings and participates in student and/or program assessment as directed

Remains current in practices, trends and research related to areas of assignment

Cross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed

Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College

Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment with colleagues and maintains effective working relationships

Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies

Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activities

Performs other duties as assigned

Reports to the Nursing Program Director

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from an accredited program; AND

A minimum of three years of experience in nursing in areas such as medical/surgical, gerontology, maternal child, psychiatric, or community health nursing, AND

A minimum of one year of training, teaching or precepting experience in a nursing program or healthcare facility, or completed coursework in teaching methods, curriculum development, testing and evaluation; AND,

Current unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Montana; AND,

Current Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification; AND,

Valid Montana driver’s license with insurable driving record, OR ability to obtain license by start date; AND,

Ability to travel within Montana when necessary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program.

Two years or more of completed course work in curriculum development, principles and methods of teaching, and measurement and evaluation of learner outcomes.

Two years of teaching experience in a nursing program.

One year of experience working in a simulation/lab setting.

Certifications: Basic Life Support Instructor, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to effectively teach content material in using a variety of instructional methods to facilitate student learning

Ability to maintain current Montana Registered Nurse licensure

Knowledge of and skill in using basic nursing equipment and supplies

Knowledge and computer/technology skills adequate for educational and administrative requirements

Knowledge of the safe use and disposal of hazardous equipment and chemicals

Ability to work within policies and procedures of FVCC

Ability and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the College by interacting appropriately with the college community and community

Ability to maintain effective and positive professional relationships

Ability to follow and issue directions

Demonstrated communication, presentation, quality customer service, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills

Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds

Ability to intermittently work non-traditional schedules including evenings, weekends, etc.

Ability to perform a Medium Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry.
