The Argonne QIS Group in MSD and Q-NEXT is looking for candidates to fill a post-doctoral researcher role to design, fabricate, and measure next generation superconducting qubits at Argonne. A successful candidate should have completed a doctorate degree in physics, materials science, or related field. They should be experienced in nanofabrication with demonstrated interest in quantum information science with superconducting devices. The successful candidate may also, and is encouraged to, participate in related efforts in quantum sensing and hybrid quantum systems.

The primary project will focus on the design and development of novel fabrication methods for trilayer superconducting qubits with a particular focus on incorporating atomic scale processing (i.e. atomic layer etching and deposition) into the process workflow. The project will involve materials and electrical characterization of superconducting devices including Josephson junctions.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Experimental lead on developing and optimizing nanofabrication processes for trilayer superconducting qubits at Argonne.

  • Contribute to the setup and operation of a new dilution refrigerator system.

  • Contribute to the ongoing efforts to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all. This will include involvement in ongoing workforce development, including mentorship opportunities.

  • Build and maintain a working knowledge of technological tools.

  • Participate in writing scientific papers, experimental progress reports, document technical developments, driving new initiatives, and presenting results.

Position Requirements

  • Completed PhD within the last 0-5 years.

  • Knowledge and experience with nanofabrication.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with microwave and quantum control electronics.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with cryogenics and vacuum systems.

  • Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.

  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team in a collaborative environment.

  • Ability to work normal daytime work hours at the Argonne site in Lemont, Illinois 3+ days per week.

  • Ability to work independently and without constant direction in the performance of routine tasks.

  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork.

  • Experience with superconducting thin films is desired.
