Description

Bravera is hiring for a Fraud Risk Manager for any Bravera location. Bismarck, ND or Fargo, ND preferred. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing the bank’s comprehensive fraud prevention, detection, and response programs. This role monitors transactional activity across all channels (ACH, Wire, Check, Credit Card, and Digital Banking) to protect the bank and its customers from financial loss. The Fraud Risk Manager investigates complex fraudulent schemes, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, and collaborates with law enforcement and internal partners to mitigate emerging risks.

MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Minimize Fraud losses incurred by Bravera and customers.

  • Bring continuous awareness of emerging fraud risk trends to Bravera and customers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Management & Oversight

  • Develop, maintain, and update the bank's fraud risk assessment, procedures, internal controls, and processes to align with regulatory expectations and industry best practices.

  • Identify fraud risks in new and existing products, digital channels, and operational processes.

  • Oversee and optimize the bank's fraud detection software systems (e.g., Verafin, FCD), ensuring rules and scenarios are calibrated effectively to minimize false positives while identifying and preventing true fraud.

  • Participate in due diligence, onboarding, and ongoing monitoring of fintech and embedded banking relationships to ensure appropriate fraud prevention and detection controls are in place.

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism regarding all employee and customer issues and information.

  • The employee will adhere to all banking rules and regulations, including but not limited to the requirements of the Bank Secrecy Act. In addition, the employee will be proactive in the prevention of illegal activities, will vigilantly look for activities that may constitute any type of fraud including money laundering, and will report any suspicious activity to the BSA Officer.

Detection & Investigation

  • Lead investigations into complex fraud cases, including identity theft, account takeover (ATO), business email compromise (BEC), vendor email compromise (VEC), loan fraud, elder financial abuse, and internal/employee fraud.

  • Act swiftly to restrict compromised accounts, place holds, initiate wire/ACH recalls, and coordinate with peer financial institutions to recover stolen funds.

  • Maintain meticulous investigative files, documenting evidence, video retention, loss calculations, and root-cause analyses.

  • Oversee fraud detection, monitoring, and investigation activities.

  • Analyze deposit account, loan, ACH, wire transfer, check, remote deposit capture, and online banking activity for potential fraud.

  • Identify fraud patterns and recommend improvements to monitoring procedures.

  • Assist with recovery efforts and restitution opportunities when fraud losses occur.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Draft and file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) related to fraud within mandatory regulatory timeframes, ensuring strict adherence to FinCEN guidelines.

  • Prepare regular fraud trend reports, loss metrics, and mitigation strategies to the Enterprise Risk Management Committee, Audit & Risk Committee, Board of Directors, and various areas of management as needed.

  • Support internal audits, external audits, and regulatory examinations.

  • Provide documentation and reporting requested by examiners and auditors.

Collaboration & Training

  • Serve as a point of contact for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and preparing documentation when subpoenaed.

  • Design and deliver ongoing fraud awareness training for frontline staff, loan officers, and back-office teams to improve early detection.

  • Partner with Marketing and Digital Banking to develop educational materials helping retail and commercial/ag customers protect themselves against fraud.

  • Work closely with Operations, Information Security, Retail Banking, Lending, Compliance, and BSA personnel.

  • Coordinate Fraud training to all staff members across the organization and Fraud Department training to expand knowledge based on recent fraud emerging risks and trends impacting Bravera.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES & COMMITTEES:

  • Participate in Fraud Focus Group

  • Participate in Action Teams and Committees as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Fraud Specialist Lead

  • Fraud Specialist staff

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered).

  • Experience: Minimum of 5–7 years of banking experience, with at least 3–5 years directly in financial fraud investigation or fraud risk management at a community or regional bank.

CERTIFICATIONS (Highly Preferred)

  • CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner)

  • CAFP (Certified AML and Fraud Professional)

  • CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist)
