Minimum Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in the field of technology related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of computer hardware, software, operating systems (Windows and macOS), and peripheral devices.

  • Familiarity with networking fundamentals, including connectivity troubleshooting, installation, and repair for wired and wireless networks.

  • Understanding of imaging, software deployment, and system update processes.

  • Knowledge of common academic and administrative technologies used in higher education (e.g., classroom AV systems, learning management systems, office productivity tools).

  • Awareness of IT service management practices and ticketing systems (such as TeamDynamix, ServiceNow, or similar).

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving technical problems.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced support environment.

  • Proficiency in documenting support activities, including problem details, resolutions, and follow-up actions.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for supporting faculty, staff, and students with varying levels of technical expertise.

  • Skill in providing excellent customer service and maintaining a professional, approachable demeanor.

Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies quickly.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The Technology Support Technician (Temporary) provides day-to-day technical assistance to faculty and staff at North Carolina Central University to ensure effective use of campus technology. This position delivers one-on-one troubleshooting support and plays a key role in maintaining reliable technology services across campus.

The technician supports departmental computer labs, technology-enhanced classrooms, faculty and staff offices, and conference rooms by performing basic break/fix tasks. Responsibilities include hardware and software support for standard, campus-licensed equipment and coordination of imaging processes. The role also offers foundational support for hardware, applications, operating systems, and networking to resolve routine technical issues efficiently.

Assist with the University’s wireless refresh project by supporting equipment installation, testing network connectivity, documenting completed work, and helping ensure reliable wireless service across campus.

All work activities are documented through the university’s IT service management system (TeamDynamix), including ticket submissions and updates for completed tasks.

Success in this position requires a strong technical foundation, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a customer-focused approach to service. This is a temporary position.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Central University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) provides information technology services to schools and departments, administrators, staff, students, and the growing population of online and distance education students. The objectives of ITS are to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the administrators, faculty, and staff at NCCU through the use of technology; enhance the teaching, learning, and research processes through the use of technology; and provide adequate support for the technology that is deployed.

Work Hours Monday - Friday 8:30 am -5:30 pm
