Full job description

Overview

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.

Our directorates related to Mission Support & Operations include Office of General Counsel, Business Services, Communications and External Engagement, Operational Systems, Communications and Information Technology, and Performance Management.

The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides crucial financial, procurement and sales, and project management services to PNNL, as required under our management and operations contract for operating the Lab on behalf of the Department of Energy. Our goal in offering these services is to ensure efficient, effective, and compliant business operations that enhance PNNL's scientific impact.

BSD presents exciting opportunities for financial professionals seeking career growth. We foster a dynamic environment where individuals can develop their skills, take on leadership roles, and contribute to high-impact projects. By working with multidisciplinary teams, professionals have the chance to broaden their expertise, engage in continuous learning, and advance their careers while contributing to the groundbreaking scientific work at PNNL.

Responsibilities

The position coordinates BSD’s Business Information Stewardship model, including the Business Information Stewardship Team (BIST), business information standards, trusted information products, reporting priorities, KPI governance, and information product lifecycle practices. The role works across Accounting, Procurement, Planning, Projects, Travel, Property, and other BSD functions to establish consistent business definitions, improve information reuse, and strengthen operational and executive decision support.

The Principal Analyst partners closely with Information Technology, the Analytics Community of Excellence (ACE), Enterprise Architecture, the PNNL Center for AI, CORE program teams, and other enterprise partners to translate enterprise capabilities into trusted business information and measurable business value. Rather than developing or operating enterprise technology platforms, the position provides BSD business leadership, stewardship coordination, requirements definition, governance support, and analytical guidance while preserving enterprise technical ownership.

Key Responsibilities:

Information Stewardship and Governance

  • Advise BSD stakeholders on business information stewardship, reporting, analytics, and information-enabled decision support within established governance and organizational frameworks.

  • Coordinate implementation and ongoing operation of BSD’s Business Information Stewardship model, including facilitating BIST and coordinating stewardship activities across BSD business functions.

  • Develop and maintain BSD business information standards, including business definitions and rules, KPI ownership and measurement expectations, intended use and audiences, and refresh requirements.

  • Manage BSD’s inventory of trusted business information products, including executive dashboards, operational reports, KPIs, business metrics, and recurring decision-support products.

  • Coordinate reporting governance, data-quality improvement, metadata practices, information product standards, and stewardship forums.

  • Clarify and align accountability among business owners, information stewards, architects, security partners, and technical implementation teams.

Reporting, Analytics, and Decision Support

  • Analyze business needs and develop information requirements for dashboards, reports, KPIs, metrics, and other decision-support products.

  • Evaluate and prioritize reporting and analytics opportunities based on decision-making needs, business value, reuse potential, and organizational priorities.

  • Coordinate with enterprise analytics organizations to develop or modernize executive dashboards, operational reporting, semantic models, and trusted information products.

  • Coordinate BSD business readiness for ERP-enabled reporting and analytics transformation, including major enterprise system implementations.

  • Evaluate opportunities to improve reporting, analytics, automation, information quality, business processes, and workforce effectiveness through trusted information and enterprise capabilities.

  • Develop meaningful measures and review results to assess improvements in information quality, reporting effectiveness, reuse, decision support, workforce productivity, operational insight, and business value..

Innovation and Responsible AI Adoption

  • Coordinate responsible adoption of enterprise AI and other emerging capabilities for BSD business needs, partnering with appropriate enterprise organizations.

  • Analyze and evaluate AI use cases with business stakeholders and enterprise AI partners, considering business value, suitability, risks, and governance requirements.

  • Develop reusable AI prompts, business guidance, knowledge resources, and leading practices that support workforce productivity and responsible use of enterprise AI capabilities.

  • Facilitate discussions that help business stakeholders understand appropriate use, limitations, risks, and governance considerations associated with AI-enabled solutions.

  • Coordinate with Information Technology, enterprise architecture, security, privacy, records management, and other partners to address applicable requirements.

Leadership, Communication, and Partnership

  • Develop executive briefings, business analyses, recommendations, roadmaps, performance reports, governance materials, and organizational communications.

  • Analyze complex business information, reporting, analytics, governance, and innovation issues; present findings and recommendations to senior leaders.

  • Facilitate cross-functional governance teams, stewardship forums, workshops, and requirements discussions.

  • Coordinate collaborative partnerships across BSD and enterprise organizations, influencing outcomes through facilitation, business analysis, stewardship, and trusted relationships rather than direct operational authority.

  • Align stakeholders on accountability for business ownership, stewardship, architecture, security, and technical implementation.

  • Communicate complex business and technical issues clearly to executive, business, and technical audiences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 9 years of relevant data analyst or AI adoption experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 7 years of relevant data analyst or AI adoption experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Oracle Cloud ERP, HCM, SAP Concur, or comparable enterprise business platforms.

  • Experience within the U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory complex.

  • Experience establishing or operating business information stewardship, data governance, reporting governance, or analytics governance models.

  • Experience facilitating cross-functional governance teams, stewardship forums, workshops, or requirements discussions involving multiple business organizations.

  • Experience developing enterprise business information standards, metadata practices, information product inventories, business definition frameworks, KPI frameworks, or reporting lifecycle standards.

  • Experience supporting ERP-enabled reporting or analytics transformation, including business readiness for major enterprise system implementations.

  • Experience developing or modernizing executive dashboards, operational reporting, semantic models, or trusted information products.

  • Experience evaluating and prioritizing analytics and reporting portfolios based on decision-making needs, business value, reuse potential, and organizational priorities.

  • Experience developing reusable AI prompts, business guidance, knowledge resources, or leading practices that support workforce productivity and responsible adoption of enterprise AI.

  • Experience advising stakeholders on the appropriate use, limitations, risks, and governance requirements of AI-enabled solutions.
