Full job description

Job Description Summary

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will be the hands-on manufacturing lead for complex aerospace components and assemblies for Edison Works Next Generation Products, from concept through full-rate production. The role brings both conventional machining and fabrication knowledge. It shapes producible designs early in the design cycle, develops manufacturing readiness and technology maturity, and moves hardware into robust production processes at internal GE shops and external suppliers that meet safety, quality, delivery and cost goals. This engineer will co-chair producibility reviews for machined, fabricated, welded and assembled hardware.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

Design & NPI

  • Work with Design Engineering to apply "Design for Producibility" to machined parts, fabrications, weldments, tooling and assemblies.

  • Use expertise in conventional machining (turning, milling, drilling, grinding, broaching, shaping, sawing) and fabrication (sheet metal forming, bending and rolling, hydroforming, spinning, stamping, laser and waterjet cutting, welding, brazing, joining and structural assembly) to improve producibility at the conceptual design stage.

  • Review drawings, GD&T, and weld/joint callouts for manufacturability, and recommend design changes that lower cost and risk.

  • Co-chair producibility and design reviews so that manufacturing needs are built into the design.

  • Build technology roadmaps tied to product needs, carry out technology projects, and advance Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) milestones.

Manufacturing Readiness & Planning

  • Develop process methods, routers, tooling and fixture concepts, programming needs, and quality and inspection plans for machined and fabricated hardware.

  • Prepare detailed should-cost and lead-time estimates for components, assemblies, fabrications and tooling.

  • Create manufacturing schedules and review supplier routers and process plans.

  • Spot quality, delivery and cost risks early, such as distortion, weld integrity, dimensional conformance, fit-up and machining capability, and put mitigation plans in place.

Production Transition & Rate Readiness

  • Work with internal shops and outside suppliers to move from prototype to full-rate production that meets quality and delivery targets.

  • Evaluate and develop suppliers, and support process development, first article and production readiness.

  • Work with Supply Chain from purchase order through milestone planning to hardware delivery.

  • Lead structured problem solving to resolve production issues and reach rate.

Leadership & Program Execution

  • Manage integrated schedules, align cross-functional teams, and deliver commitments on time and at cost.

  • Act as a key contact for DoD customers and stakeholders, communicate risk clearly, and manage within business processes.

  • Mentor less experienced engineers, give technical training, and capture best practices.

  • Use FLIGHT DECK (Standard Work, Action Planning, Problem Solving), uphold safety and quality, and promote a lean culture.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma/GED with at least 4 years of experience in Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials Science, Chemical or a related field

  • At least 5 years of experience in Manufacturing Engineering or a related aerospace field

  • Must be a US citizen

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance

  • Willingness to travel domestically 10–20% as needed

#LI-AW2

Desired Characteristics

  • Significant aerospace manufacturing experience with both conventional machining and fabrication (forming, welding, brazing, joining, structural assembly), with exposure to non-conventional machining and inspection

  • Proven experience taking hardware from NPI/development through production readiness and rate production

  • Proficiency with GD&T per ASME Y14.5, and the ability to interpret weld/joint specifications and callouts

  • Knowledge of inspection methods such as CMM, dimensional layout, weld inspection and NDT

  • Familiarity with aerospace quality standards and specifications such as AWS and AMS

  • Special process experience; Special Process Certifying Agent and/or Nadcap experience is a big plus

  • Experience with exotic alloys

  • Experience with MRL assessments, should-cost modeling and supplier development

  • Master's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial or production engineering

  • Humble, transparent, focused, a strong leader and a problem solver

  • Note: To comply with US immigration and other legal requirements, it is necessary to specify the minimum number of years’ experience required for any role based within the USA. For roles outside of the USA, to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, the JDs should focus on the substantive level of experience required for the role and a minimum number of years should NOT be used.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Therefore, employment will be contingent upon the ability to prove that you meet the status of a U.S. Person as one of the following: U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. Citizen, have been granted asylee or refugee status (i.e., a protected individual under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).
