Full job description
The College Core (https://cas.nyu.edu/core.html) at New York University invites applications for visiting lecturer appointments, with the rank of Lecturer, to begin September 1, 2027, pending administrative and budgetary approval. We are seeking recent NYU doctoral alumni with strong records of teaching; and candidacy for these positions is limited to NYU graduates within three years of their degree award. These are full-time, non-tenure track, one-year appointments in either the Foundations of Scientific Inquiry or Foundations of Contemporary Culture components of the Core. On good performance and in view of the teaching needs of the College, the positions are potentially renewable for an additional two years: NOTE, however, that incumbents are limited to a total of three years in this rank combined across all schools of the University. The primary instructional responsibilities are leading three sections of Complexities seminars per term, or the equivalent, and other duties to be assigned; and a one-course relief is granted in recognition of these other activities. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until positions are filled, but for best consideration applications should be made prior to November 1, 2026.
Compensation:
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Successful applicants will have demonstrated effectiveness as college-level teachers, and will have completed their dissertation defense by August 1, 2027. Individuals selected for this position will not be allowed to engage in employment outside of the College Core Curriculum.
This position is open to recent NYU PhD graduates only (i.e., received an NYU degree within the past 3 years).
Applications must be submitted through Interfolio. Applications should include a cover letter, a recent curriculum vitae, and a draft Complexities Seminar course proposal. In your cover letter, please begin by listing your area of specialization and areas of competence, then discuss your teaching record, before turning to details of your research profile. On your CV, please be sure that your educational record appears first, including the actual or expected month and year of your doctoral degree award.
For the Complexities Seminar Proposal:
Complexities Seminars meet once per week for a double class period (two 75-minute sessions, back-to-back, with a 15 minute break between them). The course is built around a shared library of course materials, which individual instructors are welcome to supplement in their own class sections. A description of the seminar program can be found at this link (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xb2YVvx-8FDwmXfdU6C-MTdwYT7aNrWj/view?usp=drive\_link) . It is expected that every seminar will include at least two (2) modules drawn from the natural sciences, (2) from the social sciences, and (2) from the humanities, and that roughly 2/3 of the course will be composed of materials from the shared resources library. Individual instructors are welcome to fill the remaining 1/3 of the course either with other materials from the shared library or of their own design. NOTE: It is neither expected nor required that applicants’ proposals will include new material.
For the proposal, please give a weekly schedule of classes. In addition, please give a narrative description, not more than two (2) pages, single-spaced, in which you discuss your reasons for choosing the course modules to include and how you see them connecting over the weeks of the semester. Should you wish to include class excursions, note that they need either to be readily accessible from campus within the assigned class period or to be such that students can complete them on their own schedules. Complexities Seminars typically are designed around a series of integrative course assignments, often with an intellectually culminating individual or group project. NOTE: You are welcome to include proposed course assignments, especially of creative projects; but keep in mind that there is also a collection of course assignments and activities in the wider shared resources library that others have had success with in the past, and that it is neither expected nor required that applicants’ proposals will include new, detailed plans for course requirements.
