Engineering Technician I-Survey
Interviews will take place the week of November 16, 2026
The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications at time of appointment.
Future Salary Increase June 2027 – 4.50% increase to base pay (3% Across-the-Board + 1.50% Market Adjustment)

The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for Engineering Technician I-Survey. Employees in this role support field surveying operations by maintaining survey vehicles and instruments, transporting and setting up equipment, and assisting with measurements and data collection. Responsibilities also include locating and installing survey markers and performing or verifying essential surveying calculations to ensure accurate project data.
The Department of Public Works has immediate openings for Engineering Technician I-Survey in the Land Surveying Division. Hiring Process and Timeline: The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. I. Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. II. Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. III. Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years paraprofessional engineering or surveying experience performing one or more of the following: materials testing; field surveying; data collection and analysis; drafting and statistical computations for design and public works projects; subdivision and parcel map checking and/or real property engineering involving legal descriptions, drafting and research; OR,
- Two (2) years of college level course work in engineering or surveying; OR,
- Any combination of education and experience described above, which equals two (2) years.
NOTE: Thirty (30) college semester units from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in engineering is considered equivalent to one (1) year of work experience.
If applicants would like to use the college education requirement (#2 OR #3) to qualify, then they must submit a copy of an official or unofficial transcript from an accredited U.S college or university, or a copy of a certified foreign studies equivalency at the time of application. These documents can be attached to the application during Step 1 of the application process. Examples of such documents include: diplomas; official transcripts; unofficial transcripts; letter of verification; or certified foreign studies equivalency if college education was obtained outside of the U.S.

Conditions of Employment As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process. Evaluation The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based upon scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate, as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provide is accurate and qualifying.
