OPERATOR — GAS DISTRIBUTION (Kansas City)

Mears Installation, LLC is looking for Operators to support our Kansas City, MO jobsites. You'll join field crews to safely complete gas distribution projects, working directly under the Foreman and Superintendent. The role involves outdoor work operating construction equipment and assisting craft workers with their assigned tasks. Best of all, this is year-round work — gas distribution doesn't shut down when the weather turns or the commercial market slows.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Operate heavy equipment including excavators, track hoes, backhoes, front-end loaders, and skid steers to excavate or move dirt, rock, and other materials.

• Prepare and maintain equipment for safe daily operations.

• Perform safe and clean trench excavation and backfill.

• Set and pull shield shoring in accordance with OSHA safe practices.

• Move and drive tractor-trailers or truck-and-trailer combinations.

• Uphold all Mears Installation, LLC safety requirements and wear appropriate PPE as needed.

• Comply with operating safety rules and regulations per OSHA safe practices.

• Complete documents, reports, or job aids related to work, equipment, and safety.

• Load and unload company vehicles, and pre-trip equipment before mobilizing to the job site.

• Assist in securing the work site and equipment at the end of each shift.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

• Valid driver's license (Class A CDL a plus — we'll help you earn one).

• DOT Medical Card (if driving a commercial motor vehicle).

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Keen attention to safety, with a strong work ethic.

Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

PAY & ADVANCEMENT

• Starting pay $29.67–$32.67/hour depending on classification and equipment. Candidates with prior experience may be hired above the probationary rate, and you'll move to your post-probation rate within 90 days.

• A real career path with higher pay at each step as you qualify, including potential advancement to Foreman and General Foreman (selected by the company based on qualifications).

• Overtime at time-and-a-half for all hours over 40 in a week and for Sunday work.

• Double-time pay on seven holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day) plus holiday pay even when you don't work them.

• $3.00/hour night differential for hours worked between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

• $1.00/hour Class A CDL premium if a CDL is required for your job — and if you don't have one, we'll help you get licensed.

• $50/day per diem plus company-paid hotel lodging when you're working away from home, if eligible.

Two-hour show-up pay if you report and work isn't available.

• Retirement: the company contributes $1.40 for every hour you work toward your retirement plan (eligible after one year of service), plus a 401(k)/Roth 401(k) with a 50% company match on the first 10% you contribute — no waiting period to start contributing.

• Paid vacation, loaded up front each year: 80 hours after 1 year, 120 hours after 5 years, and 160 hours after 10 years of service.

• Voluntary short-term and long-term disability insurance, with the company paying 50% of the premium (eligible after six months).

• $200/year reimbursement for PPE, steel-toed boots, and work uniforms — and we provide your hard hat, safety vest, gloves, safety glasses, and any task-specific PPE.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work outdoors in a range of conditions, including heat and cold.

• Stand and walk for extended periods on uneven, variable terrain.

• Repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs.

• Repetitive kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching.

• Exposure to loud work environments.

• Move about, in, and around construction vehicles and equipment.

• Use hand and power tools; maintain manual dexterity for fine tasks.

• Travel to job sites as needed.

• Good vision (corrected or uncorrected) and balance are required.

This is a union-represented position covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Mears Installation, LLC and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 348. Union membership and dues apply after the 90-day probationary period, in accordance with the agreement.
