Join our growing PHLYBOP underwriting team!

We are seeking a motivated and team-oriented Underwriter I to join our PHLYBOP team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical and decision-making skills, a positive and professional attitude, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Prior underwriting experience, preferably in commercial lines or small business insurance, is preferred.

Position Summary

The Underwriter I evaluates, selects, and prices small business Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance risks within established underwriting authority. This role is responsible for making sound underwriting decisions while balancing profitability, growth, and customer service objectives. The successful candidate will work closely with internal business partners and agency representatives to provide timely, effective underwriting solutions that support organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and evaluate small business Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance risks, determining acceptability, coverage terms, conditions, and pricing within regulatory requirements and established underwriting authority.

  • Exercise sound judgment and critical thinking to make timely underwriting decisions that support profitable growth while maintaining underwriting discipline.

  • Maintain current knowledge of market conditions, loss trends, underwriting guidelines, and relevant legal and economic factors affecting the Property & Casualty insurance industry.

  • Build and maintain a thorough understanding of company products, services, underwriting priorities, and target markets to effectively assess risk and identify business opportunities.

  • Collaborate with fellow underwriters, marketing representatives, and cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional service and solutions for agents and insureds.

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with agency partners, serving as a trusted underwriting resource and business partner.

  • Participate in agency visits, marketing appointments, industry events, and other business development activities as needed within the assigned territory.

  • Partner with Marketing to negotiate new and renewal business opportunities while supporting portfolio profitability and growth objectives.

  • Contribute to profit improvement initiatives through proactive risk selection, account management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

  • Prior underwriting experience is preferred, particularly in commercial lines or small business insurance.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to make independent decisions and effectively manage workload in a fast-paced environment.

  • Self-motivated with a positive, professional, and customer-focused approach.

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while taking ownership of individual responsibilities.

National Range: $63,300.00 - $70,800.00

Ultimate salary offered will be based on factors such as applicant experience and geographic location.
