Job Summary: The Health Information Coding Trainer ensures coders are trained and up to date on the latest regulatory changes and requirements that affect coding compliance and hospital reimbursement. The trainer handles all on-the-job training for new coding graduates, coders transitioning to another level, experienced coders for any special educational needs and annual and/or ongoing educational updates. The trainer must stay current and up-to-date on all coding resources that affect coding and reimbursement. Primarily the trainer must keep coders-in-training on track with proficient outcomes both productivity and quality wise. The Health Information Coding Trainer will work with HIM management to design appropriate curriculum, teach coding guidelines, rules, etc., and report to the Health Information Manager.
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required for facility coding. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) preferred.
Work Experience: 5 to 7 years related experience. Experience coding all facility type accounts, 5-7 years coding experience, training experience preferred. EPIC and Optum experience preferred. Knowledge of National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Minimum score of 85% on pre-employment coding test. Ability to train coders remotely. Ability to utilize related software and computer/PC skills. Advanced knowledge of coding. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral skills. Ability to analyze data and produce reports using MS office. Demonstrates expertise in all types of coding.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Trains new graduate coders to code facility ancillary, ER, ambulatory surgery and inpatient accounts. Audits accounts coded by coding trainees. Evaluates progress and proficiency of coding trainee. Determines trainee readiness to code each level and recommends move to next level. Evaluates new student graduates for coding program. Prepares coders for Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Risk Adjustment Coder and/or specialty certification exams. Assists in development of curriculum and training programs for in person and virtual classroom settings utilizing HealthStream, MedLearn and other available educational software. Continuous education to stay current on coding regulations and requirements.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.
Working Relationship: Direct supervision of others - Number of people supervised: (depending on number of coding trainees) Prepares and gives performance evaluations. Works with other healthcare professional and staff.
