Job Title : Interim IT Director – Technology Transformation & Operations Position Overview

Lead a significant organizational transformation initiative focused on stabilizing IT operations, strengthening organizational culture, improving service delivery, and establishing sustainable governance practices. This interim leadership opportunity involves guiding departmental operations through a period of change while maintaining critical IT services and preparing the organization for a successful transition to permanent leadership.

Over a 9–12-month engagement, the Interim IT Director will assess current operations, align resources with institutional priorities, improve employee accountability and customer satisfaction, and implement management practices that support long-term organizational effectiveness.

What You'll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for departmental operations, research technology infrastructure, and related services.

  • Supervise managers, professional staff, and student staff.

  • Establish performance expectations and monitor organizational outcomes.

  • Make timely operational decisions and allocate resources based on departmental priorities.

  • Lead organizational change initiatives and culture transformation efforts.

  • Evaluate organizational effectiveness and recommend structural improvements.

  • Stabilize departmental operations while maintaining continuity of critical IT services and customer engagement.

  • Assess existing research technology infrastructure, services, operational procedures, active and anticipated projects, and budget needs.

  • Establish or align customer engagement procedures with divisional standards, including use of service desk ticketing systems for support requests, client communications, task and project tracking, and reporting analytics.

  • Establish governance, communication, and decision-making processes that support long-term operational success.

  • Develop and monitor departmental priorities and performance metrics in collaboration with executive leadership.

  • Coordinate departmental budgets and strategic resource allocation in collaboration with executive leadership.

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, security standards, audit requirements, and applicable regulatory obligations.

  • Remove organizational obstacles that limit productivity, innovation, and collaboration.

  • Provide executive-level reports and recommendations to executive leadership.

  • Document organizational recommendations, strategic priorities, lifecycle budgets, professional development needs, and transition plans for the incoming permanent Director.

  • Support recruiting, mentoring, and preparation of team members where appropriate.

  • Develop succession planning and transition documentation for permanent leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Completed bachelor's degree.

  • 8+ years of experience leading organizational transformation, change management, and service delivery optimization.

  • 8+ years of experience leading large, complex technology projects.

  • 8+ years of experience with personnel management, coaching, and performance accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with research cyberinfrastructure, high-performance computing, high-speed storage, and networking technologies.

  • Experience implementing governance and operational maturity frameworks.

  • Experience managing organizational change in higher education.

  • Master's degree in science, technology, or a related field.

  • ITIL.

  • Cloud infrastructure experience with AWS and/or Azure.

  • AI infrastructure experience with AWS, Azure, and/or Google.

  • Carpentries Instructor.

  • Training on HPC technologies, including Slurm and InfiniBand.
