Job Summary

The College of Business (COB) (https://umdearborn.edu/cob) seeks an engaging, student-centered professional to join its Undergraduate Student Services team.

The Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising and student-success support to undergraduate students, helping them understand degree requirements, make informed academic decisions, navigate University processes, and develop clear plans for progress toward graduation. The advisor reports to the Director of Undergraduate Student Success and primarily serves COB students. The position may include an assignment to the University's first-year advising program (START), with reporting remaining within COB.

Responsibilities*

Academic Advising and Degree Planning

  • Provide individual academic advising on degree and major requirements, course selection and sequencing, prerequisites, registration, and academic policies, explaining students; options and the implications of their decisions clearly and accurately.

  • Help students develop semester-by-semester academic plans that account for their goals, prior coursework, academic progress, and work or family responsibilities. Encourage informed decision-making and responsibility for their education.

  • Advise students transferring to COB from other institutions or other academic units within UM-Dearborn, helping them understand how prior coursework applies to degree requirements and develop an efficient path toward degree completion.

  • Help students explore and select business majors in relation to their interests, strengths, and career goals, and connect them with the Business Career Center for further career exploration and planning.

  • Help students navigate academic processes and resolve issues affecting registration or progress toward graduation, coordinating with College and University faculty and staff as needed.

Student Success and Academic Progress

  • Monitor academic progress and standing, conduct proactive outreach, and work with students experiencing academic difficulty to identify barriers, evaluate academic options, and develop plans for moving forward.

  • Identify financial, personal, health, or other circumstances affecting academic progress; help students understand their academic options; and connect them with appropriate College and University resources.

Advising Operations and Student Records

  • Review student records and degree requirements to provide accurate advising and identify potential issues.

  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of advising interactions in University information systems.

  • Identify recurring student concerns, course-access issues, and other barriers to academic progress and communicate relevant trends to the Director of Undergraduate Student Success.

  • Develop and maintain advising resources and student communications related to academic requirements, policies, procedures, registration, and important deadlines.

Program Planning and Support

  • Plan and participate in new student orientation, registration programs, and other activities that help students successfully transition into COB and the University.

  • Support recruitment, yield, and informational programs for prospective and newly admitted students and their families, and represent the College at selected academic, campus, and community events.

  • Collaborate with Admissions, COB Graduate Student Services, the Business Career Center, and other campus partners to plan and deliver programs supporting student enrollment and success.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelors degree.

  • At least two years of experience in academic advising or counseling, student services, higher education administration, or a related field.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and explain academic requirements, policies, and procedures clearly and accurately.

  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of student contacts, maintain accurate records, and balance competing priorities during peak periods.

  • Strong judgment, initiative, attention to detail, and a student-centered approach to service.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from varied educational backgrounds and at different stages of their academic careers.

  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative advising and student-success team.

  • Proficiency with common office technology, including spreadsheets, and ability to learn and effectively use student information, advising, and CRM systems.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience advising undergraduate students, particularly students transferring from other institutions or academic units.

  • Experience planning or supporting student orientation, recruitment, or engagement programs.

  • Familiarity with student information or advising systems such as Banner and Salesforce.
