Description

Why Join Michelman?

Michelman is looking for a dependable, safety-focused Team Leader to help lead our specialty chemical manufacturing team on 3rd Shift. This role is ideal for an experienced chemical manufacturing professional who can combine strong hands-on operating capability with calm, practical shift leadership. The Team Leader serves as a backup to the Shift Supervisor and provides direction, technical knowledge, troubleshooting support, and follow-through to help the shift run safely, reliably, and in an organized manner.

In this role, you will help coordinate production priorities, support operators, reinforce standard work, and maintain strong communication across Production, Maintenance, Quality, EHS, and other support functions. You will also contribute as a skilled production team member by supporting batch execution, process monitoring, material handling, packaging, area readiness, and continuous improvement activities. This is also an exciting time to join a company with a long-standing history of stability and innovation, where ongoing modernization investments are strengthening Michelman for the future and making it a reliable place to build a career.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as backup to the Shift Supervisor by providing shift direction, coordinating work assignments, and helping the team stay aligned to safety, quality, and production priorities.

  • Provide technical knowledge and troubleshooting support to operators during batch production, packaging, material handling, wastewater, utilities, and other assigned production activities.

  • Help organize the shift by reviewing production needs, balancing staffing, preparing areas for work, and supporting clear handoffs between shifts.

  • Safely operate and monitor production equipment such as reactors, kettles, mixers, pumps, filtration systems, forklifts, packaging equipment, utility systems, and related process controls.

  • Monitor process parameters, identify abnormal conditions, record data accurately, and escalate safety, quality, equipment, or production concerns promptly.

  • Reinforce standard work, procedure compliance, housekeeping expectations, PPE requirements, and safe chemical handling practices.

  • Support equipment readiness, cleaning, changeovers, line clearances, batch documentation, inventory transactions, material staging, and work order completion.

  • Coach and guide new and existing operators by modeling safe work practices, asking clarifying questions, and helping team members build technical capability.

  • Coordinate with Maintenance, Quality, EHS, Engineering, Project Teams, and peers to support safe work execution and timely problem resolution.

  • Participate in shift handoffs, daily tier meetings, safety discussions, near-miss reviews, root cause investigations, product trials, and continuous improvement activities.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • 5+ years of hands-on chemical manufacturing experience

  • Demonstrated ability to guide peers, support new hire training, reinforce standard work, and help maintain an organized and accountable shift.

  • Understanding of EHS, quality, housekeeping, chemical handling, work permits, area readiness, and production documentation expectations.

  • Ability to read and interpret batch sheets, SOPs, safety data sheets, labels, production schedules, process data, and shift communication tools.

  • Ability to make sound, time-sensitive decisions that protect safety, quality, compliance, and production continuity.

  • Ability to communicate clearly during shift handoffs and when escalating concerns to supervision, maintenance, quality, EHS, or other support teams.

  • Ability to work 3rd shift and meet the physical requirements of a manufacturing environment, including standing, walking, lifting, handling materials, and wearing required PPE.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating with Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, or EHS to resolve operational issues.

  • Prior exposure to autonomous maintenance, continuous improvement, shift leadership, team training, or root cause problem solving.

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to identify minor equipment, instrumentation, or process issues.

What Success Looks Like

Successful Team Leaders at Michelman are trusted shift resources who help the team work safely, stay organized, and keep production moving. They lead by example, communicate early, troubleshoot practical issues, and know when to escalate. They balance hands-on production work with shift coordination, coaching, and follow-through. They help operators understand priorities, maintain clean and ready work areas, document work accurately, and make decisions that protect people, product quality, equipment reliability, and customer commitments.

Employment Requirements

  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required pre-employment checks.

  • Michelman maintains a tobacco-free hiring policy, and candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screen that includes testing for tobacco products.
