The Interim Accounting Leader oversees the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and effective stewardship of organizational resources within a nonprofit environment. This role translates strategic direction from executive leadership into clear financial processes and deliverables, leads the monthly and annual close, manages grant and nonprofit accounting, and serves as a key partner in budgeting, forecasting, and cash management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily operations of the Finance Department by translating executive and CFO direction into clear assignments, dependable execution, timely follow-through, and early escalation of material issues.

  • Own the monthly and annual financial close processes, including managing the close calendar, preparing and reviewing journal entries, accruals, allocations, account reconciliations, supporting workpapers, and final financial results.

  • Deliver substantially complete and accurate financial statements within established deadlines and ensure consistency and reliability of reported financial information.

  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and related accounting records, including revenue recognition, balance sheet accounts, fixed assets and depreciation, accounts payable, payroll interfaces, third-party billing, and accounts receivable.

  • Oversee nonprofit and grant accounting for state, federal, and private funding, including award setup and amendments, restricted revenue tracking, allowable cost determination, cost allocation, billing, reconciliation, financial reporting, and compliance with funding requirements.

  • Maintain organized grant histories and supporting documentation to support audits, reviews, and ongoing grant management.

  • Coordinate the annual financial statement audit, Single Audit, and other regulatory or funder reviews by preparing schedules, supporting documentation, and managing auditor requests.

  • Resolve outstanding audit items promptly and preserve institutional knowledge regarding recurring audit requirements and expectations.

  • Lead the annual operating and capital budget processes, preparing forecasts, variance analyses, financial projections, and management reporting.

  • Partner with program and administrative leaders to explain financial results, identify risks and opportunities, and translate financial information into actionable recommendations.

  • Oversee cash management and short- and long-term liquidity forecasting, including cash positioning, receipts and disbursements, grant reimbursement timing, and working capital needs.

  • Promote disciplined fiscal stewardship and identify emerging financial risks early, recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.

  • Lead, support, and develop Finance staff by establishing clear responsibilities, delegating meaningful ownership, providing timely coaching and feedback, removing operational barriers, and building appropriate backup coverage.

  • Create an environment in which team members are trusted, held accountable, and encouraged to grow professionally.

  • Strengthen financial controls, documentation, systems, and workflows to improve accuracy, efficiency, and organizational resilience.

  • Support the effective operation of current financial systems while partnering with the CFO on automation, system integration, and future Finance technology initiatives.

  • Serve as a trusted partner to the CFO and other organizational leaders by providing sound accounting judgment, clear analysis, and practical recommendations.

  • Constructively challenge assumptions when appropriate, support decisions once made, and communicate Finance matters effectively to executive leadership, program leaders, the Board, and external stakeholders.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall effectiveness of the Finance function.

Essential Skills

  • Strong accounting and finance expertise with proven nonprofit accounting experience at a senior, manager, or director level.

  • Hands-on experience with financial analysis, financial reporting, and general accounting processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage monthly and annual close processes, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, and account reconciliations.

  • Experience maintaining the integrity of the general ledger and related accounting records, including revenue recognition, fixed assets, accounts payable, payroll interfaces, billing, and accounts receivable.

  • Proven capability in nonprofit and grant accounting, including state, federal, and private funding, restricted revenue, allowable costs, cost allocation, billing, reconciliation, and compliance with funding requirements.

  • Experience coordinating financial statement audits and Single Audits, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation and management of auditor requests.

  • Strong skills in budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial projections within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.

  • Ability to oversee cash management and liquidity forecasting, including cash positioning, receipts and disbursements, and grant reimbursement timing.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in managing and developing Finance staff, delegating responsibilities, and building effective team structures.

  • Ability to strengthen and maintain financial controls, documentation, systems, and workflows to support accuracy and efficiency.

  • Capacity to serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing clear financial analysis, sound judgment, and practical recommendations.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial matters to executives, program leaders, board members, and external stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with state agencies such as DCF and DMHAS or similar regulatory and funding bodies.

  • Background in nonprofit leadership roles, with an understanding of mission-driven operations and funding structures.

  • Comfort working in an interim or transitional leadership capacity, providing stability and continuity during periods of change.

  • Ability to partner on automation, system integration, and finance technology initiatives to modernize financial operations.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain comprehensive grant histories and supporting documentation.

  • Ability to constructively challenge assumptions and support data-driven decision-making.
