Job Description
This is a field-focused technical position responsible for the setup, operation, coordination, and troubleshooting of the grade control systems used on our paving projects. The person in this role will work closely with project superintendents, project managers, surveyors, and equipment operators to ensure our crews have accurate control, models, alignments, elevations, and machine guidance necessary to construct the work.
We are looking for someone who understands both survey/layout fundamentals and modern machine grade-control technology. This is not necessarily an engineering position. The ideal candidate may come from a survey, heavy civil construction, machine control, paving, or construction technology background.
Primary Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot robotic Total Stations and grade-control systems used for concrete paving and heavy civil construction.
- Establish and maintain Total Station setups throughout the project to support machine-controlled paving operations.
- Work with project surveyors to establish, verify, and maintain horizontal and vertical control points.
- Coordinate with surveyors and project personnel to ensure control networks are appropriate for paving operations and project tolerances.
- Set up, configure, and support machine grade-control systems on paving and construction equipment.
- Load, manage, verify, and maintain digital project files, alignments, surfaces, models, and other grade-control information.
- Review project plans, profiles, cross sections, grades, elevations, and digital models before construction.
- Work directly with the Project Superintendent to develop a grade-control plan for each project, including Total Station locations, control requirements, equipment setup, sequencing, and backup plans.
- Verify grade-control information before paving and assist crews with checks during production.
- Identify discrepancies between plans, models, survey control, and field conditions before they affect production.
- Troubleshoot Total Stations, radios, machine-control components, software, communications, and other grade-control issues in the field.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, dealers, surveyors, engineers, and technical support when necessary.
- Maintain grade-control equipment and ensure systems are properly stored, transported, charged, updated, and ready for field use.
- Help develop consistent grade-control procedures and best practices across projects.
- Train and support superintendents, operators, and other field personnel in the proper use and basic troubleshooting of grade-control equipment.
Skills and Requirements
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, grades, elevations, slopes, and alignments.
- Experience with machine control systems and heavy equipment operation (CAT or similar).
- Familiarity with robotic Total Stations and survey/layout equipment
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a field environment and travel to project sites as needed
- Experience in the concrete and/or paving industry
