We are looking for an experienced In-House Counsel to support a wine industry organization in Napa, California. This 6-month contract position is well suited for a senior attorney who can confidently advise on litigation matters while also guiding data privacy, employment counsel, and cybersecurity issues. The role offers a collaborative environment, regular interaction with executive leadership, and a flexible permanent schedule with an in-person presence two days per week, either in the Marin or Napa office. Candidates who bring strong business judgment and can step into a broad in-house legal function will be especially successful in this assignment.
Responsibilities:
-
Provide legal guidance on active and potential disputes, partnering with internal stakeholders to assess risk and develop practical strategies.
-
Advise the business on privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity matters, including issue spotting, compliance considerations, and incident-related support.
-
Review, draft, and negotiate a range of commercial agreements to help meet operational and business objectives.
-
Offer counsel on employment-related legal questions and support the handling of workplace issues when they arise.
-
Coordinate with outside counsel where needed, helping manage litigation activity, budgets, and overall case direction.
-
Participate in meetings with senior leaders and deliver clear, business-focused legal advice on sensitive or high-priority matters.
-
Step into a broad legal support role that may include taking ownership of contract workflows and other in-house counsel responsibilities.
-
Support onboarding into the legal function and help ensure continuity across ongoing matters during the contract period.
-
Assist attorneys with employment counseling matters, including drafting, reviewing, and organizing employment-related documentation, conducting legal research, and supporting responses to employee relations and personnel issues.
Requirements
Qualifcations:
-
Licensed attorney with substantial legal experience, ideally at the senior counsel or senior attorney level.
-
Prior in-house counsel experience with the ability to balance legal risk and commercial priorities.
-
Demonstrated background in data privacy and cybersecurity law.
-
Strong experience handling litigation matters, including strategy, oversight, and coordination with external counsel.
-
Proven ability to draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts.
-
Working knowledge of employment law counseling and related legal issues is preferred.
-
Comfortable engaging directly with senior executives and advising in a fast-paced business setting.
-
Prior experience supporting employment law matters, employment counseling, workplace investigations, employee relations issues, or labor and employment attorneys is strongly preferred.
