WHOOP is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Business Systems team. In this role, you will play a crucial role in architecting, developing, and optimizing the backend infrastructure and user experiences that underpin WHOOP’s internal operations, enabling scale and efficiency across the organization. You’ll design, build and evolve critical services and integrations that support Supply & Demand Planning, Inventory Management, Order Management, Fulfillment & Logistics, Membership Services, and other business functions. This role is designed for a visionary backend engineer who is passionate about building scalable, reliable, and flexible systems, eager to tackle high-impact challenges, and committed to delivering user-centric solutions that pave the way for our growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set technical direction for critical domains within the Business Systems team, establishing an architecture and roadmap that balances immediate business priorities with long-term reliability, flexibility, and scale.

  • Architect, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, integrations, and internal tools that connect business platforms, reduce manual work, and improve the accuracy and flow of data across systems.

  • Design and implement well-loved user experiences to interact with backend systems.

  • Partner with stakeholders across all of the teams mentioned above to understand critical workflows, identify opportunities for needle-moving improvement, and translate them into technical solutions.

  • Lead engineering efforts for complex technical initiatives from discovery through production rollout, coordinating dependencies across teams and vendors and measuring outcomes through operational efficiency, reliability, and user adoption.

  • Strengthen the security and resilience of business-critical systems through automated testing, observability, appropriate access controls, and improvements informed by production incidents.

  • Mentor engineers and elevate technical decision-making through hands-on development, thoughtful design and code reviews, and clear documentation that builds shared understanding and ownership.

  • Independently drive your agenda forward; this is a highly cross-functional role that needs broad trust and alignment in order to thrive. You must be skilled in driving this independently while also being able to move quickly.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • 8+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.

  • Experience delivering and operating production software for complex business workflows, with demonstrated technical leadership across multiple systems or teams.

  • Ability to evaluate architectural tradeoffs across custom software and third-party platforms, considering business value, security, reliability, and ongoing maintenance.

  • Deep expertise in designing APIs, working with relational databases, and integrating enterprise applications or cloud services, including managing data consistency, retries, and failure recovery.

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language (e.g., Java, Python, Go, or similar)., with a track record of writing maintainable, well-tested code.

  • Demonstrated ability to interface with multiple product domains, particularly in developing backend solutions for resilient, high-throughput data processing networks, task automation, and streamlined workflows to optimize business operations

  • Deep experience with cloud-based infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) and distributed systems.

  • A strategic problem-solver with the ability to turn ambiguous business needs into practical technical plans and communicate decisions clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

  • A proactive, collaborative team player, eager to take on new challenges, continuously learn, and adapt in a fast-paced, data-informed environment

  • Experience mentoring engineers and influencing cross-functional partners through collaboration, sound technical judgment, and a focus on shared outcomes.

  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
