Summary OUR MISSION: To fulfill President Lincoln's promise "To care for those who have served in our nation's military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors" - by serving and honoring the men and women who are America's Veterans. How would you like to become a part of a team providing compassionate whole health care to Veterans? Responsibilities Duties include the transport of non-critical ill patients; the pickup and delivery of items such as specimens and clinical reports; and messenger service within the Medical Center. Transports Veterans by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to and from nursing units, clinical laboratories, and other related clinical areas. Assists Nurses with transporting critically ill Veterans by maneuvering the stretcher, wheelchair, or bed to the destination. Transports non-critically ill patients throughout the VAMC, which includes multiple separate buildings. Maintains effective interpersonal relationship with patients, significant others and co-workers directed toward patient care. Ensures that transport services assigned wheelchairs and stretchers are returned to the transport area for proper utilization and accountability purposes. Provides for environmental, patient, and personal safety by using proper body mechanics, safety devices and techniques, and reporting unsafe conditions. Takes corrective action during simple potentially hazardous situations, i.e., removing objects blocking emergency exists. Reports any observed emergencies to the appropriate personnel. Reports any observed changes in the physical appearance and/or character of the Veteran during transport to the appropriate medical personnel. Document's completion of transport tasks. Provides backup duties which may include filing, answering telephone, and receptionist activities as needed for transport Center for Development and Civic Engagement. Engages in proper telephone etiquette when answering the telephone. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: (M-F): 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Telework: Not Authorized. EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: General Experience: Must possess 3 months of any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a High School diploma or equivalent. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Communications Customer Service (Clerical/Technical) Patient Care Personnel Security and Safety Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
