Full job description

A Post-Doctoral Associate position is available in the New York University Department of Anthropology for a longitudinal study of the rhesus macaques of Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, as part of a new U19 award from the National Institute on Aging. The position is initially for one year, potentially renewable for up to five years.

Post-Doctoral Associate

A Post-Doctoral Associate is sought to undertake research on sensory aging and function across the lifespan in the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques, using multi-omic measures to understand how social, environmental, and life-history factors shape sensory phenotypes. This PDA will work with Prof. James Higham, and in close collaboration with Prof. Amanda Melin, University of Calgary. The PDA will access and analyse samples in CBRU’s long-term biobank, as well as new samples being collected both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. The available data provide an opportunity to investigate how individuals’ sensory systems differ in molecular composition and putative function and health with age, and how these differences are shaped by their social and ecological environments. The position offers opportunities to collaborate on multiple ongoing and planned research studies, develop experience in new methods and techniques, and contribute to dissemination of findings through publications and conferences. The PDA will write manuscripts, and disseminate results via conference and public presentation. The PDA will spend time at NYU and UCalgary for training, sample processing and analyses. The position is available immediately, but later start dates are negotiable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the processing of biological sample (tissues, excreta and body fluids) data

  • Work with PIs to organize timelines and analysis priorities

  • Establish standard operating protocols for analysis

  • Write and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts

  • Disseminate results via public and academic presentations

This position is based in New York and the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date.

We welcome applications from international candidates; however, please note that NYU is not an E-Verify employer and therefore unable to support STEM OPT extensions.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $60,000-65,000 per year. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

A PhD in animal biology, biological anthropology, molecular ecology or a related field will be required by the onset of the position. Experience working with molecular techniques in a biosafety laboratory (e.g., DNA/ RNA extraction/ PCR/ Library Preparation/ Proteomics). Evidence of strong organizational and communication abilities. Track record of publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants should submit a one-page cover letter, a CV, and the names and addresses of 3 referees, via Interfolio. We will begin reviewing applications immediately on receipt.
