Full job description

At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. Please visit our DOTD Career Center for more information about our agency. DOTD is seeking an Engineer 3-5 to support transportation projects and programs. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews. No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series. Positions are located SULPHUR, and reports to Project Engineer. This vacancy is being advertised under two separate postings: Engineer Intern Applicant -Engineer Intern 2 and Engineer 3–5.Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

NOTE: Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Job Duties: Depending on level and assignment, Engineer 3 -Engineer 5 may:

  • Assists with bridge and structural design activities for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Reviews or prepares plans, calculations, specifications, estimates, and structural details.
  • Performs or assists with bridge load ratings, structural evaluations, or bridge preservation activities.
  • Provides technical support related to bridge rehabilitation, replacement, preservation, or new capacity projects.
  • Coordinates with project managers, consultants, districts, construction staff, and other internal or external partners.
  • Reviews bridge-related project documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Supports development or maintenance of design guidance, standards, procedures, or technical documents.
  • Assists with emergency response or technical reviews involving bridge or structural concerns.

Position Specific Details: Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as an Engineer 3, Engineer 4, or Engineer 5. Compensation: The following reflects the beginning biweekly salary for each level. A Special Entrance Rate (SER) may apply to qualifying positions.

  • Engineer 3 – SER at $3,083.20 biweekly
  • Engineer 4 – SER at $3,529.60 biweekly
  • Engineer 5 – SER at $3,776.80 biweekly

Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy. Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment (temporary appointment in a classified position for a limit of four years); or by detail to special duty.
