Platform Strategy & Architecture Lead – Java/WebSphere Position Overview

This is a senior technology leadership role combining Java/WebSphere enterprise application expertise, platform architecture, production support, application modernization, and technology strategy. The role will influence platform direction, architecture decisions, modernization initiatives, technology upgrades, and long-term technology roadmaps while providing technical leadership for production environments.

The ideal candidate brings a strong production support and application maintenance foundation together with demonstrated experience in platform strategy, application architecture, modernization, technology transformation, scalability, stability, resiliency, performance, and architecture governance.

What You'll Do Platform Strategy & Roadmap

• Partner with senior technology leaders on platform strategy, technology direction, and roadmap planning.

• Assess current-state platforms and recommend future-state technology and architecture direction.

• Provide strategic technical recommendations to improve platform stability, scalability, resiliency, performance, and maintainability.

• Balance immediate operational priorities with long-term platform strategy and transformation objectives.

Architecture & Technical Leadership

• Provide leadership and guidance on application and platform architecture decisions.

• Evaluate technical designs and architecture to identify risks, gaps, technical debt, and improvement opportunities.

• Support architecture governance, technical standards, and strategic technology decision-making.

• Provide senior-level system analysis, design, and technical guidance for Java/WebSphere and related enterprise applications.

• Apply scalable application design principles, including multithreading, SOA, integration, and enterprise application architecture.

Application Modernization & Technology Transformation

• Lead and support technical assessments, application modernization initiatives, technology upgrades, and platform transformation efforts.

• Identify opportunities to modernize legacy applications, platforms, architecture, and supporting technologies.

• Develop recommendations and technical approaches for technology upgrades and modernization.

• Drive initiatives that improve platform scalability, stability, performance, resiliency, and operational efficiency.

• Ensure modernization initiatives align with enterprise architecture standards and long-term technology strategy.

Production Support & Operational Excellence

• Provide technical leadership for Java/WebSphere applications from a production support perspective.

• Oversee application and performance monitoring using enterprise monitoring tools.

• Monitor and analyze server logs, batch jobs, application performance, and production issues.

• Provide technical leadership for Sev 1 and Sev 2 incidents, including triage, resolution, and root cause analysis.

• Lead root cause analysis for service failures and drive immediate remediation and long-term preventive solutions.

• Address business-user queries and perform technical research and analysis as required.

• Ensure recurring production issues are addressed through appropriate architectural, modernization, or technology improvements.

Application Maintenance & Enhancements

• Support application maintenance, performance tuning, and small-to-medium enhancements.

• Translate technical specifications and logical/physical designs into appropriate technical solutions.

• Provide technical direction and oversee development for issues requiring code changes, in alignment with established architecture, technical designs, and development standards.

• Review technical designs and implementations to identify potential causes of production issues and recommend improvements.

Stakeholder & Leadership Engagement

• Engage with senior business and technology stakeholders to communicate technical risks, recommendations, modernization opportunities, and future-state technology direction.

• Serve as a senior technical advisor for platform-related decisions and initiatives.

• Work effectively across large, matrixed teams involving architecture, development, infrastructure, operations, product, and business stakeholders.

• Provide technical guidance and leadership to development and production support teams.

• Translate platform strategy and roadmap objectives into actionable technical initiatives and implementation plans.

Required Qualifications

• Strong hands-on and leadership experience with Java-based enterprise applications and WebSphere.

• Strong background in enterprise application production support, application maintenance, incident management, and root cause analysis.

• Demonstrated experience in application/platform architecture and technical leadership.

• Demonstrated experience with application modernization, technology transformation, and technology upgrade initiatives.

• Experience contributing to or defining platform strategy, technology roadmaps, and future-state architecture.

• Experience with architecture governance and technical decision-making.

• Strong understanding of scalable and resilient enterprise application design.

• Experience with application monitoring, performance monitoring, server logs, batch processing, and performance tuning.

• Experience driving long-term improvements in platform stability, scalability, resiliency, and performance.

• Strong experience engaging with senior stakeholders and providing strategic technical recommendations.

• Ability to balance production operational excellence with strategic architecture and modernization responsibilities.
