Full job description

Hospice Director / Administrator – Registered Nurse

Location: Texas

Position Type: Permanent

Salary: Starting at $125,000 annually

Sign-On Bonus: $10,000

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse Hospice Director/Administrator to lead hospice operations and patient care services. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, clinical quality, regulatory compliance, staffing, financial performance, and community relations while ensuring the delivery of compassionate, high-quality end-of-life care.

The Hospice Director/Administrator will work closely with hospital leadership, physicians, staff, patients, families, and community partners to ensure that hospice services meet clinical, operational, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership & Operations

Direct and oversee the day-to-day operations of hospice services.

Develop strategic plans, establish departmental goals, and monitor performance.

Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal hospice regulations.

Maintain current policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Serve as a liaison between hospice services, hospitals, healthcare agencies, physicians, and community organizations.

Provide direct patient care when needed while maintaining high standards of service.

Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

Serve as the responsible RN leader for hospice clinical services.

Ensure patient care aligns with hospice philosophy, patient and family needs, and interdisciplinary plans of care.

Oversee the quality and coordination of patient services.

Promote effective communication and information exchange among members of the care team.

Support mechanisms for patient and family communication, feedback, and satisfaction.

Staff Management & Development

Interview, hire, train, and oversee hospice staff.

Conduct employee performance evaluations and address disciplinary matters when necessary.

Manage staffing and scheduling to meet patient and departmental needs.

Support continuing education and professional development.

Maintain accurate and timely payroll and timekeeping records in accordance with FLSA requirements.

Financial & Quality Oversight

Develop, manage, and monitor the department's annual budget.

Oversee billing reconciliation, medication discrepancies, and charge management.

Lead quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives.

Monitor departmental quality metrics and implement corrective actions as needed.

Ensure licensed personnel practice within their defined scope of practice.

Community Relations & Outreach

Develop and implement marketing and outreach strategies to promote hospice services.

Represent hospice services at community events, health fairs, open houses, and professional meetings.

Build relationships with clergy, faith-based organizations, community groups, and other partners to support patient and family needs.

Keep organizational leadership informed of hospice activities, outcomes, and performance.

Regulatory & Organizational Compliance

Participate in and lead committees as assigned.

Designate a qualified alternate to provide leadership coverage during absences.

Ensure completion of required hospice administration training.

Maintain compliance with requirements related to fraud prevention, patient/client rights, disaster preparedness, infection control, and other applicable regulations.

Qualifications & Requirements

Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas

2 years of hospice administration experience preferred

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Completion of an additional 16 hours of hospice-specific administrative education within 12 months of hire

Strong clinical leadership and management skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and work collaboratively with physicians and healthcare leadership

Strong knowledge of hospice operations, regulatory requirements, and quality standards

Ability to provide direct patient care when necessary

Compensation & Benefits

Starting Salary: $125,000 annually
