Project Accountant

Robert Half is looking for an experienced Project Accountant to join a hybrid team in Arlington Heights, Illinois. This position plays a key role in overseeing project-based financial activity, from contract setup through billing, collections, payables, and reporting. The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge of project accounting in a civil engineering environment and can ensure work is completed accurately, on schedule, and in alignment with client agreements and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

• Create and issue client invoices that reflect contract terms, customer billing guidelines, and internal accounting standards.

• Establish new projects in the accounting system and keep budgets, billing information, and contract-related records current throughout the project lifecycle.

• Monitor project financial activity by maintaining billing records, supporting revenue recognition, and assisting with reconciliations and reporting analysis.

• Review and process invoices from subconsultants, organize supporting documentation, assist with vendor onboarding, and track insurance and compliance requirements.

• Oversee day-to-day accounts receivable and accounts payable functions tied to project operations.

• Partner with project managers and internal teams to provide guidance on billing, project financials, and related accounting questions.

• Support the Controller with additional accounting assignments, ad hoc analysis, and special projects as needed.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of relevant accounting experience, including substantial exposure to project-based billing and financial management.

• Minimum of 3 years of project billing experience within a civil engineering or similar services setting.

• Strong understanding of project accounting principles, including invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, reconciliations, and revenue tracking.

• Familiarity with Federal Acquisition Regulations and U.S. government-related contract billing requirements is strongly preferred.

• Experience using Deltek tools, especially Ajera or similar platforms, for project accounting and billing tasks is highly desirable.

• Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel for financial tracking, analysis, and reporting.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

This is a hybrid position working 3 days on site and offers a salary range of $40-$55/hour and comes with a full benefits package including: medical, dental, vision, 401k with match, generous time off policy including PTO, holiday pay and floating holidays.
