Full job description

The Hopper Lab is seeking a Laboratory Manager who is responsible for the scientific and administrative activities of one or more related laboratories. The Laboratory Manager applies extensive knowledge of the laboratory's research interests to meet the overall objectives. Partners with Principal Investigators (PIs) to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, design, conduct, and manage research projects.

  • Coordinate own objectives and those of laboratory team members.

  • Supervise data collection and verification using related specialized skills and knowledge.

  • Manage staff including involvement in training, oversight, hiring, and performance management.

  • Serve as a resource for all faculty, learners, and staff working in the laboratory.

  • Responsible for facility-related issues and management of projects, e.g., lab renovations, equipment purchases, work with contractors, associated costs, etc.

  • Approve significant grant expenditures and approve significant equipment purchases in collaboration with PI(s) and finance staff.

  • Create and implement new protocols, oversee assay validations in conjunction with PI(s).

  • Responsible for overall operational elements of laboratory under general supervision of faculty researchers.

  • Responsible for systems used to track and analyze results.

  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties above

  • Provide support to teams within the Hopper lab conducting research across multiple Hopkins campuses related to animal behavior, cognition, and welfare.

  • Coordinate, and participate with, research activities, including planning lab meetings, coordinating data collection, onboarding and supervising students and veterinary fellows, and overseeing data management, curation, and analysis.

  • Track nonhuman primate breeding colony census and produce regular reports on breeding production, population structure, and other colony and clinical data reports to inform research operations and for regularory and grant reporting purposes.

  • Collect data on, and manage electronic data records for, a variety of research animal species including nonhuman primates, swine, and dogs.

  • Provide administrative assistance, including ordering supplies, coordinating with vendors, writing/reviewing SOPs, and preparing research protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • Five years of related experience.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Supervisory or lead experience in a laboratory

  • Excellent driving record

Starting Salary Range: $57,195 - $100,040 Annually ($78,620 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
