Full job description

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician. This position is responsible for performing testing pertaining to sexually transmitted diseases and infections within the Baltimore City Health Department. The Laboratory Technician performs routine laboratory processes and follows routine protocols under close supervision.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate standard equipment.

  • Use standard procedures for specific laboratory tests and preparation techniques.

  • Assist with laboratory maintenance, prepare solutions, and order supplies.

  • Identify and report problems in the completion of routine lab processes.

  • Receive, label, process, and/or analyze patient medical samples, including blood, urine, and swabs containing other bodily fluids, using the correct testing equipment, when necessary.

  • Execute laboratory testing to include approved moderate complexity laboratory tests in line with standard testing procedures, record observations, and interpret findings.

  • Perform quality assurance on all laboratory procedures.

  • Perform maintenance on equipment, ensure laboratory equipment is working appropriately, and is accurately documented to meet regulatory guidelines.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some science coursework and/or a training certificate from a technical institute.

  • An associate of science degree in laboratory technology or the chemical or biological sciences from an accredited college.

  • Certification in microscopy in a related biological field OR documentation of at least 1 year of microscopy experience.

Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CB

Starting Salary Range: $15.80 - $23.85 HRLY ($45,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

Schedule: M-F 8:30am-5pm
