Full job description

About Valar Atomics

At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.

The Team

You will be joining Valar Atomics’ Electrical Engineering team, embedded within the broader Fuel Manufacturing engineering group. The team delivers the electrical infrastructure that powers Valar’s fuel manufacturing facilities, including process area LV distribution, motor control, and emergency power. You will work alongside I&C, mechanical, and nuclear safety engineers in a collaborative environment that demands technical precision and a strong safety culture. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to some of the most technically interesting power distribution challenges in the advanced nuclear sector.

The Role

Valar Atomics is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the design and delivery of low voltage electrical systems for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities. The role will contribute to LV system design, power system studies, equipment selection, drawings, specifications and field support while working closely with senior electrical engineers and multidisciplinary teams. This is an opportunity to work on first-of-a-kind industrial facilities and develop hands-on experience with complex electrical systems in the nuclear industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain electrical load lists and support power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting and harmonic analysis, using SKM Power Tools, ETAP, EasyPower or equivalent.

  • Support arc flash hazard analysis and labeling in accordance with IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E.

  • Support grounding and bonding design for LV systems in accordance with NEC Article 250 and IEEE 142.

  • Assist with sizing and selection of LV switchboards, MCCs, panelboards, dry-type transformers, cables, bus duct, VFDs, UPS systems, batteries and standby generators.

  • Develop and update single line diagrams for LV distribution systems, from the secondary of the unit substation through MCCs and final distribution equipment.

  • Prepare and maintain electrical equipment layouts, cable schedules, tray routing and duct bank designs.

  • Support specifications and data sheets for LV electrical equipment and industrial control panels to UL 508A / IEC 61439.

  • Support electrical area classification drawings and selection of equipment for hazardous locations in accordance with NEC Articles 500/505 or IEC 60079.

  • Assist with LV protective device coordination studies, time-current curves and breaker trip unit settings.

  • Develop and review electrical drawings, including MCC control wiring diagrams, DC control schematics, panel arrangements and distribution details.

  • Support technical evaluations of electrical equipment and vendor bids, and review vendor drawings, calculations and technical documentation.

  • Support electrical installation specifications and participate in pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including insulation resistance testing, continuity checks, trip unit testing and equipment energization.

  • Coordinate with I&C engineers on motor, VFD and control interfaces, and with civil and structural engineers on equipment foundations, cable routing and penetrations.

  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews and other multidisciplinary engineering activities, and support resolution of technical questions from vendors, contractors and field teams.

  • Prepare engineering calculations, reports, drawings and specifications under the direction of senior electrical engineers, applying applicable codes and standards.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • 1+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably in industrial, process, power generation or other complex facilities.

  • Understanding of LV electrical distribution systems and fundamental electrical engineering principles.

  • Familiarity with power system analysis software such as SKM Power Tools, ETAP, EasyPower or equivalent.

  • Familiarity with electrical design deliverables, including single line diagrams, load lists, equipment specifications, cable schedules and electrical layouts.

  • Working knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, ANSI and NEMA standards.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • EIT designation or active pursuit thereof.

  • Experience with LV switchboards, MCCs, VFDs, UPS systems or standby power systems.

  • Experience performing or supporting short circuit, arc flash or protective device coordination studies.

  • Familiarity with hazardous location classification and static electricity control (NFPA 77).

  • Experience with industrial control panel design or review to UL 508A or IEC 61439.

  • Experience with DC systems and battery sizing.

  • Familiarity with nuclear quality requirements (e.g., ASME NQA-1) or nuclear fuel facility design.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary

  • Equity ownership in a rapidly growing advanced energy company

  • Comprehensive medical benefits

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Free daily lunch

  • Generous PPE stipend

  • High-impact startup environment with significant ownership and autonomy
