Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
The SUNY Geneseo Facilities Department is looking for a reliable and dedicated individual to join our team as a Head Grounds Supervisor.
In this role, you’ll serve as manager of the grounds maintenance operations. You’ll oversee Facility Operations Assistants 1 and 2 (Grounds) responsible for maintaining the appearance and condition of grounds, gardens, athletic fields, walkways, parking lots, and roads on campus.
Your responsibilities will include:

training employees and providing detailed oral and written instructions to direct reports

managing all administrative functions for grounds and garage personnel

project planning

procurement and purchasing services
-
personnel and employee relations
-
inventory and budget projections and analysis
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance work, of which two years involved supervisory experience over subordinates; or one year as a Supervisor of Grounds.
When required to operate a motor vehicle, applicants must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. As determined by the State agency or campus, some positions may be required to possess appropriate license or certification to apply pesticides, herbicides and other treatments.
Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.

Function 1: Supervise & Schedule Work
-
Supervise and coordinate activities of grounds and garage crew engaged in landscaping or groundskeeping activities
-
Respond, prioritize, and schedule requests for routine to urgent grounds maintenance service
-
Schedule and assign work crew to specific jobs and actively check worksites to ensure projects are progressing according to schedule and that materials and equipment are being used properly
-
Provide training to staff by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials
-
Monitor performance to ensure specific tasks to meet quality standards
-
Organize special events for campus-wide grounds projects
-
Assist in the planning of landscaping and other grounds projects by preparing rough sketches and schedules and estimates of the manpower, materials, and equipment needed to accomplish the project
-
Provide managerial oversight for garage operation and serve as fleet manager in support of the campus mission
-
Improve and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure maximum return on investment of all equipment, vehicles, and rolling stock
-
Develop and maintain Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedules and activities for all facilities grounds & garage equipment and campus vehicles (including ATVs)
-
Ensure daily inspections and cleaning take place for all equipment to ensure prolonged life, usefulness, and safety of equipment to minimize breakdowns, failures, and hazards
-
Plan for snow emergencies and assign staff as required to respond to such emergencies
-
Report to Assistant Director of Custodial & Grounds on the progression of projects
-
Coordinate and oversee athletic and track setups for campus sporting events

Prepare purchase orders and justification for grounds/garage materials, equipment, and supplies

Assist in the selection of grounds contractors and monitor the work to ensure completion according to contract specifications

Prepare the annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget and justification for grounds/garage department operational costs

Maintain the grounds inventory system

Develop, implement, and maintain cohesive landscaping
-
Collaborate with appropriate departments across campus in advance of special campus events

Participate in the interview process and selection of new staff
-
Evaluate work performance and recommend retention or termination of employees
-
Handle employee relations issues including counseling and discipline

Maintain records of employee time, work performed and materials used
