Full job description
About Pepper Pepper is the operating system for the independent food distributor, serving the $1T industry we all rely on to feed us every day. Our customers are the family-owned, regional, and specialty wholesalers supplying the restaurants and stores in your neighborhood. We're the category leader, and we recently closed a $50M Series C, backed by Lead Edge, ICONIQ, and Greylock. Our agentic products handle the messy and manual workflows that the industry has run on for decades, rebuilding how distributors set prices, take orders, collect payments, and find new customers. We're growing quickly, with a large, untapped market in front of us, and a slew of new products on the way. We're a tight-knit, high impact engineering team organized by vertical, with pods of engineers, product managers, and designers building together every day. AI is both how we build and what we build: engineers ship to production with their preferred agentic coding tools while customers benefit from Pepper's agents in the field. New Vertical Engineering at Pepper As an engineer on the New Verticals team, you'll develop products that deepen Pepper's offering for convenience store (c-store) distributors. You'll be a key member of a high-ownership team empowered to supercharge the product development cycle for an important, rapidly growing group of customers. Your decisions will directly shape the product, and you'll see firsthand the customer impact from the things you ship. What You'll Do
- Ship features end to end: build across our web and mobile apps in React, React Native, TypeScript, and Python, from database schema to user interface.
- Build for c-store distributors: develop workflows for promotions, ordering, pricing, and payments, including hardware integrations.
- Learn the core operations that keep independent distributors running: shadow ordering, pricing, collections, and sales motions, and turn what you learn into product.
- Build with AI: use AI tools daily to improve your own workflows.
- Own meaningful parts of the technical architecture: help set the bar for code quality through code review, testing, and clear technical design.
- Work closely with Product, Design, and Ops to turn customer signals into what we build next.
What You'll Bring
- 3+ years of professional full stack development experience, operating at the level of an engineer who independently owns features from design through deployment, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 2+ years of consistent hands-on experience in each of: a backend language (Python, Java, or similar), a frontend framework (React, Angular, or Vue), and TypeScript.
- Solid engineering fundamentals: modern frontend testing (Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright, or equivalent), SQL and NoSQL databases, software architecture, code review, and debugging.
- AI fluency: you use AI development tools such as Claude or Codex in your day-to-day work.
- Startup pace: startup experience is strongly preferred with a bias towards action and get-it-done attitude.
- Authorized to work in the US or Canada without sponsorship.
- Nice to have: • Python, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, or Django
- React Native or other mobile development
- ecommerce or similar product experience
- experience in food distribution, convenience retail, supply chain, or other vertical SaaS
Location Remote in the United States. Why This Role Food distribution is a foundational industry that has been overlooked by technology companies for decades. The code and products you ship enable the distributors who keep our supply chain running to move more goods and eliminate painfully manual processes. This new position is at the forefront of a new vertical that's quickly gaining traction and on a team that's building with the best tools and tech stack available. Pepper is growing quickly, and you'll grow with us as we continue to expand to new frontiers. Compensation Salary of $175,000 – $190,000 USD
