Full job description

Description

Amazon Leo is a long-term Amazon initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), providing low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Direct-to-Device (D2D) is Leo's initiative to enable standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect directly to satellites, filling coverage gaps in remote areas.

As a Hardware Development Engineer, you will help design, build, and validate hardware for the phased array antennas in our satellite constellation. You'll design circuits and test boards, bring up new hardware in the lab, and measure whether it meets its performance targets. You'll work with senior hardware, RF, firmware, and test engineers, and the hardware you work on will end up in orbit.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design circuits and boards for antenna subsystems and test hardware, including schematic capture and PCB layout review

  • Bring up new boards and prototypes in the lab, and debug power, clocking, and digital or RF signal problems

  • Characterize hardware performance using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, power meters, and signal generators

  • Write test plans and run validation testing to confirm designs meet their requirements

  • Use Linux-based tools and scripts to command and operate the phased array during bring-up, integration, and test

  • Analyze test results, find the root cause of failures, and help drive design fixes

  • Work with RF, firmware, and test engineers to integrate new hardware into the larger antenna system

  • Support production teams by investigating hardware failures found in manufacturing test

  • Document designs, test procedures, and results

Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field

  • Experience designing or debugging analog, digital, power, or RF circuits through coursework, internships, projects, or industry work

  • Experience with schematic capture or PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence, KiCad)

  • Experience using electronics or RF test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, power meters, or signal generators

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field

  • Experience with RF or mixed-signal design, or with RF/EM simulation tools (e.g., ADS, HFSS, CST)

  • Knowledge of digital interfaces such as SPI, I2C, JTAG, Ethernet, or high-speed SerDes

  • Experience with Python or MATLAB for test automation or data analysis

  • Exposure to phased arrays, antennas, or aerospace, defense, or telecommunications hardware
